Can anyone tell me how to get the RS back up lights to work on a car that was an auto trans but was converted to a 4-speed? what am I missing i.e., linkage, etc, that would send the message from reverse gear to the back up lights? Any help would be appreciated, I am stoopid on stuff like this.thanx, penguin in Florida

Most likely the shift interlock rod that runs between the reverse gear lever and the bottom of the steering column. It fits between the reverse lever and the "Y" shaped lever mounted on the subframe right near the clutch Z bar. From the other end of the "Y" bracket there should be a rod that runs up to an eye at the base of the shifter column to operate the backup lights.

Thanx for the info. Is there any where that I can obtain those parts that you described? are they available through any of the resto places or is this something I have to hunt down thru e-bay, junkyards, etc.?

Rick's has all the parts you need - the switch is on top of the steering column, a couple of inches back from the inside of the firewall; if you're lucky, it's still there.

You will need the rod from the steering column down to the bellcrank, which is mounted on the frame, and also, the rod from the bellcrank to the transmission.
Also you will need the reverse switch (not re-produced). And get 2 trans. retainer clips.

If you want the entire set-up you should also get the clutch safety switch and rod, to prevent starting in gear.(clutch must be depressed to start the car.)

All of these parts except the switch, are available from D&R Classic Automotive 1888-camaro1 in Illinois.

The bellcrank from the auto and 4 speed cars are different so get one of those too.

These parts will also lock the steering wheel when the key is off, and lock the shifter in Reverse.

Send me an email and I will look up the part number for the switch - it was used on all manual trans cars 1969-1979 so they are out there if you look.
