ok,fuel gauge pegged at 3,tested harness to gauge by grounding lead in trunk, yes gauge goes past emty.next test ground wire under car from sender to a known good ground,no movement of gauge with good ground
is this a bad sender?

Grounding the wire from the fuel tank sending unit will not have any affect on the fuel gauge.

Disconnect the tan wire from the fuel sending unit> gauge should read full

Ground the wire that you disconnect from the sending unit>gauge should read empty.

If this works ok the gauge and the wiring from the sending unit to the gauge is good and problem is either the installation of the sending unit or the sending unit itself.

I already tested tan wire on harness and all that came back good (reads past empty.plugged it back in.If I ground the wire from under car (tank strap wire on pass. side) with key on,gauge should work if sender is good...right?
Yes the sender/tank should be grounded via the black wire to the tank strap.

Its also possible the tan wire connection to the sending unit is not good.

With the tan wire connected to the wire that goes to the gauge what does the gauge read with the key on?
With everything hooked up like normal
it reads past full, when grounding harness/gauge end,it goes past empty.
So I've cleaned the ground wire under car to tank strap, and got good ground, still stays above full
Not the ground wire but the tan wire where it connects to the sending unit may not have a good connection.

if that’s not the case then the sending unit is bad.
if a 64 year old man can do it by himself, so can anyone!

I went through these tests a couple of months ago. Found it to be the sending unit. I bought one of those syphon hoses that you shake up and down (one end in the tank filler tube), and the other in a large gas container. Drained about 98% of the tanks gas out. Placed a floor jack under the gas tank sender (with a 5 inch or so 2x4 to spread the load). Loosened the left and right tank straps and lowered the gas tank down. It can be easily done by one person. Removed the sender ring using a punch and hammer to spin the ring. Then pulled out the sender.

The "sock" at the end of the fuel line was gone! I guess it got sucked up and burned!. Cleaned the tank while it was down, reinstalled the tank (reverse the procedure), and put about 8 gallons of ethanol free gas back into the tank. I used ethanol free because I knew I was not going to be driving the Camaro for awhile, as it was getting new floor panels.

Woohoo, working fuel gauge again.
