Hey all,

What size taps are needed for a 350? I am able to get a hold of some and these are whats available:

7/16-24
7/16-20
7/16-14

1/4-28
1/4-20
1/4-18

5/16-40
5/16-32
5/16-24
5/16-18

3/8-24
3/8-20
3/8-11

The standard tap sizes are:
1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16, 3/8-24, & 7/16-14.
Pipe plugs are 1/8-27, 1/4-18, 3/8-18 and 1/2-14.

Most of those sizes don't exist in the normal nut and bolt world.
Here is bolt sizes that you'll find on a normal engine and chassis.

1/2-13 NC
7/16-14 NC
3/8-16 NC
5/16-18 NC
1/4-20 NC

1/2-20 NF
7/16-20 NF
3/8-24 NF
5/16-24 NF
1/4-28 NF

The crankshaft has Fine threads for the flywheel and the balancer

Head bolts, accessories all have Coarse threads.

BUT :eek:

If you are using them to clean out the threads on the block and other parts prior to rep-assembly ... then you want to use 'Chasing' taps, NOT a regular "Plug" or "Bottoming" taps ;)
And - Never use a "Taper" tap to chase threads! They just dislodge all the $hit and shove it to the bottom of a blind thread hole ...

I have several sets of chasing taps for engine and other work.

I have a set of ARP chasers also (@$100) that are specifically designed for installing their studs and fasteners - or so they told me ...
I also have a small set from Summit/Jegs (don't remember who) that just has the popular SAE sizes for american vehicles. Like these - http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/80505/10002/-1?CT=999

Use of a 'standard' type tap can and will cause issues with torque readings and can ruin threads in parts - I've fixed many for folks over the years ... :(
