I have a 327 in the 67 the motor is fresh but has sat for close to 20 years .I replaced all gaskets inculding head gaskets.
it has a large cam in itwith sloid lifters .I set the lifters at .030 just top get it started (after reading the Z28 post) I was surprized to hear the rocker ticking very loudly even after the motor warmed up also the oil pressure was over 100(pegged the guage)this motor I was told went 11.20's in a all steel 71 nova in the 1/4.
my question is :
is there a general setting to put the lifter at or is it different for each cam?
does that oil pressure have anything to do with the setting time of the motor?

thanks!!!!

I didn't get any spec's with the motor since it'd been around for so long.
what about the oil pressure any ideas?

Talk to a seasoned mechanic about the solids if you can't find anything on your cam... Intake's and exhausts can be different so don't take the numbers I posted and run with it. You didn't happen to check what they were set at before you adjusted them by chance? that would get you back in the ball park!!

As for timing and oil pressure the only relationship I can think of is if your timing is causing the engine to run hot you may see a bit lower pressure reading...

Well,I talked to the guy I got the motor frombut he can't remember the clearence.
I guess I'll have to go by ear .
the car runr and starts right up but those rockers are really noisey.how much ticking does a solid lifter make.should I adjust them until they are just quite.
I figure the worst that can happen is I'll wipe the cam!

Do you know the mfg? Their tech lines can usually give advice. A lash of .015 is too tight. I would suggest .020 - .022 hot. I had the same problem. I was told the motor had a Crane cam so I called them up and gave them the idele vacuum and characterisitics. They cam back with .020 on the intake and .022 on the exhaust. You can also look at some cam websites, check the specs and back into a ballpark figure. Too loose and you'll bang the crap out of the valvetrain.
