Hi,

I have a 67 327/210hp with a Powerglide. It's an RS without the high-performance rear-end upgrade, so it's a 3:08 - unless, of course, it was changed at some point in the past.

Today, I was running a few errands. It probably ended up being a round-trip of about 30 miles or so - not too bad. On the way back, however, the car began to act like it was running out of gas. It idled perfectly fine and revved fine, too. But, I put it in gear (high or low didn't matter) and after brief acceleration it would be starved of fuel.

A couple things are different about today than any other day:

1) It has been HOT here lately, and today is a bit cooler - it's 93° outside right now.

2) I was low on fuel - not on empty, but my gauge is all screwed up and I don't know how to fix it. So, I've run out of gas before when it was at about 3/8 on the gauge. Today it was at about 7/8. Bottom line is I usually fill up every 100 miles because I just don't know how much gas I have. In any case, I filled up and it started to spill out at only 8 - 8.5 gallons...

So, my tank is full and the car sat in a parking lot for about 30 minutes or so and had a chance to cool off somewhat. It started up just fine and did not act starved of fuel for the final 1-mile trip back to the office...

Any ideas? I'm really bummed out because I have no clue.

By the way, I did have my dwell meter with me and while I was stopped on the side of the road, I hooked it up. Dwell is steady at about 30-31.

Ignition problems often reveal themselves under load. Try power braking the car to load up the motor a bit and see if it coughs and farts. Looking under the hood in the dark is a good way to find where the spark is getting out.

Crap in the fuel system will mess it up also. Filters clog, debri can get into the jets or hang up the float. Sometimes you let it sit for a few minutes and the debri falls away and it runs fine for a while.

OK, it's been nearly 40 years since I did away with my points, but I remember dwell needs to be around 19. Right?

I had something very similar going on. In my case it turned out to be a very dirty fuel line with a lot of debris in the carb. When I pulled out the metal screen filter from my Edelbrock carb, I could not believe the crap that was stuck to it. Took the carb apart, gave it a good cleaning and blew it out. Insatlled a new inline fuel filter. Seemed to do the trick.

Factory spec on my 327 (and it's all still pretty much original) is between 28-32. I usually keep it at 28-29.

Regarding the dirty lines and debris - this is a possibility. I'll have to look back through the receipts and see the last time the fuel pump was changed... maybe never. The line from the tank to the pump is new so it could be the old one from the pump to the carb or just the pump itself.

I rebuilt the carb about a month ago, so it is all nice and clean.

Fred, point gap is .019", dwell 28-32 deg.
