Here's what is happening. The starter engages then, after the engine turns about 1/4 rotation, the damn starter lets go and grinds against the flywheel teeth. I started the car about 4 hours ago and it was fine. Now, this happens.

Here are the steps I've taken, nothing has worked yet:

-Turned the engine by hand to see if a tooth was broken off the flywheel.

-Noticed a loose ground strap coming off the battery. Fixed that.

-Had the starter out about two weeks ago when I rebuilt the tranny. There were two shims which went right back in the proper orientation. So, it's not that.

-Threw ratchet across the garage and ground MY teeth!

Any ideas guys? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Chad

btw. The motor is a Gen 1 small block Chev with an OEM starter.

The first thing I'd check is to make sure the starter is tight and has the correct knurled starter bolts. It sounds like it is possibly moving. They also had a brace from the factory for the front of the starter to block that prevented this. If the above doesn't help, you may have a weak/bad bendix and could try another starter.

The bolts are definitely the right ones, though, I will double check that they are tight enough. That is definitely a possibility I hadn't thought of.

If that doesn't work then I guess I have a good excuse to buy that new mini-starter!

Thanks a bunch guys; it was starting to get a little frustrating.
