My 92 Firebird has a problem often when starting. When it had the V6, you would hit the key, gauges would move, but engine would not crank. Clutch switch tested fine and gauges do not move without the clutch pushed. Relay seems to be clicking. I figured it would go away when I went to a V8, but the problem is still there. Totally new starter, but still happens. Any ideas?

Thanks guys... and gals

I had the same type of problem with my S10. Sometimes it wouldn't crank, but everything else worked. I would try it a couple more times and it would start. It turned out to be the positive battery cable corroded inside the insulation at the terminal. Just a thought...

Hi Mark,

Iwould go with Mark on the connections. Check the batt cables both ends.

If this don't fix it here is what I would do. Run a wire from the purple wire on the starter to the inside of the car. Get a two wire bulb socket, hook one side to ground, and the other to starter wire. Every time you start the engine the bulb will light up.

So if you turn the key and it don't start, but the bulb lights up, it's the starter or still a connection problem.

If you turn the key, and it don't start and the bulb don't light it is most likely the ign switch.

Thanks guys. I though about the light bit, or even a momentary push button to give it 12 volts. I have a new battery and cables, so I doubt the problem is there, but it is worth another check. My last thought, is it could be that damn "chip" in the key. I know if you false the computer so many times, it locks you out for a bit.

I dont know if this is what the problem could be, But I have been having MANY rpoblems with my 91 Camaro. I asked at the dealership what the problem could be... What I was told, was the PASS KEY MODULATOR, For the security system, was going out... Cost $177 plus mechanic fees... But, Auto Zone told me, you CAN bypass that part... if you know security systems... IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS, Will you please email me with some info???

I had the exact same problem with an '82 Trans AM years ago. Since it was under warranty the dealer replaced the starter twice, but it still didn't work all the time. I got fed up one weekend and a buddy of mine suggested a shim. It was a simple alignment problem and the solenoid couldn't kick out. Frustrating that a 'trained' gm mechanic couldn't figure it out. I never had another problem after that.

The da*m stud on the stater was loose. Right where the battery cable connects, the is a stud. The stud has a nut, the cable, a lock washer and another nut. I could move the whole thing. I tightened up the first nut, now the stud is tight. Wonder if the problem will come back. It has started every time so far.
