Here's one for ya'...

I have all the wiring harnesses out of the car and have pulled the alternator.
Can I start the engine? If so, could you please tell me how to do it?

Is it non-computerized?!?
If not, wire the alrernator with the regulator, coil, distributor and hot wire starter to start it.

Install the battery, connect the ground and starter cables.
Run a hot wire from battery + through a ballast resistor to the coil + side, attach the dist lead to the - side of the coil.
Get a remote starter button with aligator clips on it and attach one lead to the bat cable on the starter, the other lead to the block side small terminal marked SOL.

You can run a cold engine for about 5 to 10 minutes with no water pump or alternator. The less time, the better.

Pull the coil + wire to stop.
You must be very careful to not touch the coil + wire when disconnecting to turn off the engine. that circuit will have around 300 Volts in it when you disconnect. If you pull the wire off the coil, it's fine, you will be holding the end attached to the battery.
If you disconnect at the battery, you will be holding the end of the wire that is still connected to the coil + terminal and might revieve a shock.

David's is the same way I did mine when the car was under constuction. Here's a few words of warning, learned the hard way.

1) Be very careful since the car can be started in gear. On an automatic car it will take off as soon as the engine catches. On a manual trans it will take off as soon as you hit the button.

2) Run the jumper wire from the battery extra long so that it is in reach while sitting in the drivers seat (or milk crate in my case). That way in an emergency you can yank the jumper wire off.

that's nothin...anybody ever start an engine without a carb on it? i did when i was 14.had my cousin dump a little gas in the intake, tapped the key and the thing revved like nothing i have seen before or since.no exhaust after manifolds, in 1 car garage.hey, i needed to know if the motor was good. neighbors weren't too happy at 3 am, but what did i care? it ran..

Ihad a friend who took his carb off to work on it.
He left the key in the ignition, his dad came by and wanted to move the car...
It ran from the fuel coming into the intake from the disconnected fuel line.
When he turned it right off, a fire started and burned the hood and some other stuff.
I either pull the battery cable, or at least pull the coil wire when working on a car.

Wow...I really had no idea a car would start without the carb.
Since we're sharing, did you know that a '69 307 will run on 2 cylinders, but not 1? Its a little rough on 2, but it will start and run. Does that do anybody any good to know this? Probably not

Ya, my friend has a lowered S-10. He tried to start it but it wouldn't, because the thing wasn't in park (he did not relize this at the time), so he thought i'll just climb under, hotwire it, then take it in to have it looked at... Well he was QUITE surprised when the thing started and took off.. With it in high idle, he grab on for the ride of his life... It pulled him about 40 feet then it hit his apartment building.. That really hurt his ego... He still has skid marks on his ***

I was 15, just purchased this '69 chevy truck, and just had to piddle with it. I pulled the plug wires off and tried to keep what was left of the firing order as evenly spaced as possible...I think I ended up with 1 and 6 and it would still start! I dont think there was any real reason for me doing this...just one of those kid things, I guess
