I have a general question on a HEI ignition. How does the distributor get the juice during the cranking phase to start the engine? I understand the ignition switch in the crank position will send juice to the starter to turn the motor over, but where does the distributor get its juice from at that point?

The HEI needs to have a 12 volt source that is available when the key is in the on and or run position.

killer,
On a factory wiring harness, there is an 18 gauge yellow wire that went from the "R" terminal on the starter to the + side of coil. This supplied +12V to the distributor during the crank cycle. If you are using a newer hi-torque starter, you will need to install a start relay to supply the power during crank.
Usually, on 68-up ignition switches, the IGN stud on the switch is live during the crank cycle and does not require this extra wire during crank. I belive 67 needs it though. Hope this helps!
