I have manual steering on my 68 and it has some play in the steering, can this be adjusted out and where would I start?

The only correct way to adjust a manual steering gear is to remove it from the car and do the adjusting with an inch-lb torque wrench. Here are the instructions and specifications on adjusting the gear.

Having said the above. It is possible to do a fairly decent adjustment by feel with the gear in the car. You will have to follow the directions in the following paper very carefully because you are repeatedly driving the car short distances to and making small adjustments to the gear. The worm bearing adjustment is made with the gear near full lock. The sector shaft preload adjustment is done with the gear exactly on center.

thanks for the info, while driving the car the steering wheel can be turned about 4" before the wheels actually turn.
