My 69 PS steering is loose....lots of play (steering play is loose from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock). What is the best option/for the money in terms of steering upgrades. I would like the steering tighter. Any suggestions?
Start off by checking the Idler arm and the pitman arm. They may be worn out. With car off, have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while your under there, look for play in both of those arms.
And read what Mr. Pozzi has compiled regarding suspension and steering on his site: http://www.pozziracing.com/first_gen_suspension.htm
First, if you are okay with the effort the 69 box provides, try adjusting the existing box first. If you search "adjust box" or "box slop", you should find the details on how to adjust the box using the set srcew and nut on top. Fi you can't find it, I will and post the link.
Many of us have switched to a 3rd gen F-body steering box to get away from the "pinky steer" of the 1st gen boxes. David has a link to Brain Lewis' write up on the steering page of the link John posted above. It's fairly straight forward and can be a big improvement.
