hi, im new to old cars but im really looking at buying one...i found a fully restored 68 camaro with a 406 in it, and i plan on doing some other mods to it, i was wondering would the stock 10 bolt be suitable for this (that is what it has) or would i need to get a 12 bolt? thanks

Welcome to the club, as choptop said, best site around, we think.

Your 10-bolt should be fine until it breaks. I had one in a '67 with 28X10.5 slicks for 9 years of track running @13.5's to 14.2's and it finally let go by breaking the carrier. I owed it everything, I still have it, case and one axle, some day I'll bring it back to life.

Once again, welcome.

It is the best site on the web!

as long as you aren't hooking up it should work fine.
If you plan on launching hard or have a firm shifting tranny (or like to dump the clutch) the 8.2'' rear probably won't last.

You can also look into upgrading to an 8.5'' 10-bolt out of a early 70s Nova. Direct swap. They are much more durable than the 8.2''.
