Street Racing in Texas?

My son lives in North Austin a little west of Mopac. The last time my wife and I were down there in the middle of the night you could hear the turbo cars screaming around the area.
Shes down there now and told me this morning that it sounded wild last night. On a map you can see how they could be running laps on the expressways the area he us living in. Curious if any of you Texas guys could shed some light on this.

Mostly teens and "20 somethings" with their imports and Hellcats.
There's a somewhat new thing around here in MD where they are blocking major intersections and doing donuts.
Maybe same there ?

Doubt it. My son lives in the middle of an area bordered by 3 highways. I think they run hot laps on that setup counterclockwise, and it's a distance. There was a time window in between the sound bites. Some engines were distinctive, and you could recognize the sound.

I watched that clip and that is reckless and insane to do something like that with bystanders close by. People could get seriously hurt or even killed. What if a tire blew and chunks hit someone with pieces of steel belt . what if he blew the engine apart and shrapnel came flying out the sheet metal is thin these days. In my youth we did a lot of horsing around like hole shots burn outs and street racing but never down town .We would go to where the warehouses were at night nobody there We also had desolate streets where there were no people to get hurt except us. those days are long gone and I don't condone any of this these days too many people but we were all young and foolish. What these people are doing needs to be stopped and punished . The things we did burn outs etc were not as reckless as what we just saw. it was also 45plus years ago less people less cars and lots of places that there were no people to get hurt. alex

Correct, it is a disease that needs to be cured. The ones who are getting hurt or killed usually had no involvement except being in the wrong place. $5 years ago we did it also in the wilderness and the only thing we disturbed was cows and rice. State Police would come by and wave and be on their merry way. Now you care would be impounded, probably be stripped in the impound lot and you would be thrown under the jail. I am afraid to take my motorcycle out or my cars after a suspended license uninsured texter smashed my truck to the tune of $8K. Now after spring nationals in two weeks Houston Raceway Park is closing forever to make way for warehouses. Doesn't leave much for legal racing except for the east Houston 1/8th mile track, Hennesy to the west or San Antonio. There had been rumors for years about a new major track west of Houston but development has likely squashed that.

It’s not the stuff we did in the 70s, Hp was lower, speeds were much slower, and I personally wouldn’t run any where that had crossroad access.
Laws were different and even then you didn’t want to jack around and get caught by the Texas DPS.
YouTube and street outlaws has only made it more popular….It will probably continue, to some extent no matter the penalty …..confiscation of vehicle law or state jail time?
I guess I’m still thankful to live in a country where your free to be as stupid as you can afford to be, and hopefully you don’t ask anyone else to suffer for that stupidity.
Sideshows and craziness like that is getting pretty common in the larger metropolitan areas around me in Ca. Also.

and wow !
Mopar always seems very well represented.

The Dodge brother commercials on TV are doing what they intended. Selling muscle cars. All the other brands are mostly SUV's or trucks with maybe a sporty car somewhat showing up for a quick glance and in the background. All these young adults are persuaded that Mopar is the muscle car to go with, other than the many rice burners. I AGREE, back in my heyday; we went out of town and sometimes crawled under our cars to uncap the headers and throw on slicks. No one was around and if by some chance some cars started showing up we quit racing until things were clear again. What's missing today is RESPECT, INTEGRITY and COMMON SENSE. They need to be stopped doing these things in town and with so many bystanders. I was crazy and wild back then, but I wasn't stupid.

It’s better than going to the bar and getting stupid and driving home drunk. It’s just a bunch of kids out having a good time and the older gen don’t approve of it. Street racing goes back to boot legging

So you are saying if you don't get drunk it's OK to put peoples lives in danger. Driving drunk and reckless is no better than reckless driving. Both kill. As you put it us old guys did the same and in a way we did but most of our racing was done in out of the way places unlikely to be busted by the cops. Many went to the track on Grudge night to settle our bets. We didn't do it in larger groups and staged widespread races on public ways..

i'm fortunate enough to live in a region with plenty of country roads, long, flat, straight. don't see the side show stuff going on around here but there is a serious street scene, orginized, set up middle of night. $$$. the people really dangering others and causing problems are these side show things where they get into the middle of metropolitan areas and literally just block off intersections to do donuts and drifts with 100 people around the cars that are spinning in circles on the edge of control. they do it in the middle of citys like philly and baltimore and the participants and crowds out number the cops so they act like rules and laws don't pertain to them. same as you see with the kids on dirt bikes and 4 wheelers in the middle of city streets, waiting to learn the hard way. the guys that are setting up 1/8 mile grudge stuff for $$ are doing it with serious cars that they don't want to see impounded or wrecked. that's more a sport than a freak show like the drift takeovers

I was in NC a couple months ago and they do the late night drag racing with pickup trucks. As I recall they all had a weird stance or front lift. Fortunately our hotel room didn't face the "main drag".

In my county of MD, the police decided they would stop pulling over cars or even pursuing speeders and drag racers. Then the cherry on top is they decided to inform the public of their new policy. Magically, the number of vehicular related deaths has gone up, both drivers and innocent bystanders, pedestrians, or other drivers. Go figure.

To quote Forest Gump "Stupid is as stupid does".

I wouldn’t call controlled doughnuts reckless driving.
No one is talking about simple donuts on this post, they are talking about large high speed gatherings and racing on public roadways. Just curious how old are you, 20? You mentioned age first. I am 68.

I recall when the Mopac construction was completed, the crews blasted out some of the hillsides and you just knew the car sounds would definitely echo
