Thinking about switching my 5 speed to a automatic transmission, does anyone have a idea on what it will take and a approximate cost that would be involved?

Transmission, crossmember, radiator, if present one is not equipped with oil cooler, oil cooling lines, shifter, linkage at carb for kickdown, flexplate, and maybe proper length driveshaft.

Wouldn't a separate cooler work, instead of a new radiator? I have the tranny and flexplate.

Yep, a separate cooler can work fine. Just needs to be located and sized appropriately.

It all depends on the transmission you want to install. But Everette covered most of what has to be addressed. Might also involve a vacuum line, modulator, downshift down linkage, specific torque converter, pedal change over, possible console purchase and installation, and more.
