The transmission has three spots to install the shifter. Out of the box it is in the location furtherest from the engine. What is the optimal position for the shifter?

I have a 1969 Firebird.

Mine was/is the rear mounting with the shifter towards the front if that makes any sense. But, I'm using a Red Roberts shifter.

I think I understand. You used the middle slot. I need to take the red shifter part off and rotate it 180 degrees.
