Hi all,

Well, my '68 finally got here and I want to start the mods. with removing the aftermarket tach. The previous owner installed a Sunbeam tach. and I want to remove it for a couple of reasons: 1) I'm not into big gawdy tach. staring me in the face. 2) I can hear the cable twisting inside the housing, but the needle doesn't register anything. I want to remove it and if someone here wants it, I'll let it go. Any way does any one know how to remove a tach.? I want to remove it so someone else can fix it and use it. It still lights up, so the wiring inside is still good, I guess? Any one know how to remove one?

Well usually it is pretty simple. Remove the wires going to the coil and modulator (if present), and then just undo the clamp or screws holding the tach down to the dash or column. Once the tach is loose and the wires have been taken off the other parts, just follow the wires under the dash, and make sure they are free so you can guide them out. Once you have the tach loose should be pretty easy to get a little slack and a little at a time work the wires lose so it can be removed.
This is a very general description of what you can do without me seeing it.

If there is a cable going to the distributor, then follow the same directions but you should be able to remove the cable first.

If you posted a pic, we could be more specific, on removal.

It sounds like you have a tach-drive distributor. Which was originally offered on 63-74 Corvettes. Although I'm sure there were aftermarket versions.
With the air cleaner off, remove the drive cable from the bottom of the distributor. There should only be 2 wires going to it. Ground and power to the light in the tach. The ground is probably screwed to the underside of the dash somewhere. The power wire is probably spliced into the dash lights.
