From vin Looks to be a 6cylinder convertible. But the cowl tag says its a 8 Cylinder car and convertible. Some either switched vins or tags.. most likely cowl tag.. sorry

Not correct. All trim tags are coded with the V8 #.

However, the rivets arent right, so it has been removed at one time.

1 = Chevrolet
2 = Camaro
3 = 6-cylinder engine
67 = convertible body
9 = 1969 model year
N = Norwood, OH assembly plant
530593 = vehicle serial number sequence

Decode for body number: 155263

10D = Built the Fourth week of October.
69-12467 = Convertible.
NOR = Built in Norwood Ohio.
711 = Standard Black Bucket Seats.
40-B = Lower Color is Butternut Yellow and the Convertible Top Color is Black

I thought knew the tag and vin didn't line up(but my assumption was the same as Brad's), but neither really looked right to me. Without knowing how to detect a fake, the tag doesn't look right... but I don't know for sure. The vin looks like it is a brand new tag???

its a 69 6cyl norwood built convertible camaro that was the 530593 built. and the trim tag is convertible norwood 711 black standard int with 40 butternut yellow w/ black top and the build date looks like 10D oct 4th week of 68. in the camaro restoration guide book they give a table of when the cars were built and it shows yours should be an 11a car. october ended with vin#530337 according to the book. i dont know if this is true or not. robert.

The VIN:tag date is fine. It is not exact. 530337 was the last car built on the last day of the month. There were still others in line behind it that would still have had 10D tags. Being within a couple hundred cars, it should be fine.

Here is the only pic I have of the car so far. It currently has a 396 / 375 with an M-21. Just to hard to tell anything of substance from this pic:

I know the dealer selling this car, it's Gary Katsaris at The Garage.
I also saw it advertised as "1969 Convertible SS Phantom Camaro--396/375 HP NICE CAR - $44000", but didn't realize its a butternut yellow 6 cylinder car until I saw your post. Thats alot of money for a 6 cyl car.
Whats with the name "Phantom"?

The cowl tag is correct. 12467 on the cowl denotes convertible. This can be confirmed here. http://www.chevy-camaro.com/chevy-camaro-trim-tag-decode-1969.asp The 3rd digit of 3 on your VIN tag denotes 6 cylinder. The 10D would be the correct build date. I purchased my first 1969 back in 1989 and it was original. That VIN # was 530621 which was only 28 units after yours. That also had a 10D tag.

.........Guess that means it doesn't have it's original motor. :)
I dunno......... I think it might. When I talked to him he said it had a 396, but when you read the ad it shows a rare 6 cyl in it:

http://www.americanclassifieds.com/ad_display.cfm?adid=60687040&classificationid=127167&paper=39

I looked in all my books and searched the entire CRG site and came up empty... I know the 286 was rare, but I never knew it came with this kind of hsp??? Maybe the experts can chime in here.

You know, it's kind of funny you made a typo while making fun of his typo....

This dealer sells alot of consignment vehicles and relies on what the owner tells him to sell the car.
He has been in business a long time and I am sure by now he knows what's real and what isn't, but it's a lot easier to play dumb and say "thats what I was told so thats how I advertised it"
We all know it's an original 6 cyl car, and I bet it does not have the 4 bolt main 375 HP special block.
All that aside, it looks like a nice car, just be an informed buyer.

Steve:

I don't know anything about this dealer or the car - but, @$40k for a BB 'vert doesn't seem out of line of the car is solid ...
Even though it left the GM plant as a L-6 doesn't mean it isn't a good buy in it's present condition - if the implant was done correctly and it's a solid driver. You could always use a good "driver" ;)
Just for giggles, I looked up some other nice '69 'verts to see if the condition and pricing could be supported. Here are links to some adds with both SB's and BB's that show the prices for the SB's to be in the mid~upper $30k range and the original(?) BB's to be in the $40~70k range.

Red BB - http://www.cars-on-line.com/23065.html

Blue BB - http://www.cars-on-line.com/22962.html
(Obviously I can't speak to the condition of these or any vehicles I haven't seen in person - just comparables, maybe ... )

Looking through this small sample of what's out there right now would make me lean towards the car being fairly priced as I thought.
You can always "deal" and see if they are game to sell it :thumbsup:

Let me know if you want someone to test-drive it for you :D

Your good bay area buddy;

I wasn't trying to but the seller's chops.... I talked to him on the phone and he seems like a very nice guy. I was only having a little fun. As for the typo, I thought about changing it before I posted, but that was part of the fun too. I think he honestly was asking me to find out what the tag really meant because I don't think he knows. that's the reason I posted it in the first place. Never having met the seller or visited his shop, I have no bones to pick with him one war or the other.

I thought it was a nice looking car. It wasn't represented as being original, or not. It was being represented as a BB vert. Personally, if the car is as nice as most of their cars listed on their sight look, it could be a nice driver. I just wanted to post the tag info so I could know as much about it beforehand.

Steve:
:sad: Didn't mean to make you cry ... :noway: ( :D :D :D - just in case someone takes it wrong ...)

Tag Decode is:
69 = year model
12467 = Camaro convertible
NOR = Norwood, OH final assembly
155263 = Body assembly sequence number
711 = Black Standard interior
40 B = Butternut Yellow w/Black top (one of my favorite colors :D )
10D = October (edit - oops) 4th week production

As discussed, the VIN is a L-6 - decode:
1 = Chevrolet Division
24 = Camaro series
67 = Convertible body structure
9 = 1969 model year
N = Norwood assembly plant
530593 = VIN sequence number

(edit AGAIN ) Wow - dumb-dumb-dumb ... I see Dave decoded ot way back in the post - sorry, I missed that somehow in reading through - late to the party again ...

Give me a call if you need more tag or other info. clarification;
John
