I finally have all the parts ready to put my Muncie back together. This time, I want to make sure that this transmission doesn't leak. Does anyone have any advice, tips, tricks of the trade, or anything on how to assemble one of these trannys so that it doesn't leak.

The guy that I bought the case off of says that he coats the gaskets in axel grease during assembly. This doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Should I use silicone on the gaskets or just leave them dry. What do you put around the front part of the countershaft? This case produces a good press fit.

Well, I have to say that sealing is more of a prep and cleanliness issue.

I have had the best luck with a THIN coat of clear silicone sealer on the gaskets, after wiping the surfaces down with non-chlorinated brake cleaner like NAPA p/n 4800 or 4810. Then allow it to dry before adding oil.

Specifically in dealing with the cluster shaft, I spray the case and shaft with cleaner, let dry and then apply the silicone.

Think clean, clean...clean. This applies to all devices that are to be sealed. But is my input on transmissions.

If you dont plan doing rebuilds too often and really want it sealed, I can also recommend a sealer or two that will not leak.

(Yeah, get this) Toyota Seal Packing p/n 00295-00102.

Or

A sealer called Wacker. Its an OE drivetrain sealer that DANA Speicer uses to seal their transmissions, transfer cases and differentials. It is orange in color....

you want to run a flat file across the mating sufaces to make sure there aren't any burrs or stuff.
if you use sealer be sure to use a very thin coat all the extra will squeeze out (into) the trans and could plug something up.
this is very important on the front bearing retainer.

A tranny guy I talked to liked putting a rubber 0-rings on the shift shafts before installing them. He would put the o-ring on and cover it with the stock metal/rubber seals. The idea was to install the outer metal/rubber seals and drive them in untill they just start to drag the shift shafts rotation. They loosen up during use once they get some lube on them. It has not leaked from there yet and that was a source of leaks in the past. It worked for me!
