would a nova 10 bolt with multi leaf spring change spec for rear wheel size and back spacing on a 69
looking into 17"/ 18" wheel staggered setup

If that's a 72~79 Nova (X-Body) rear axle - then :noway: it won't ...

how can I tell the difference
is there a stamped number?
it has been on the car for a number of years

:yes: There should be a code stamped into the right (passengers side) axle tube facing towards the front of the vehicle as installed.
This code will contain the ratio, assembly date, plant and option(s) (posi for example).
Some codes are specific to a given make/model from one of several GM divisions that assembled an X-Body based vehicle for their line under their specific name(s).

You can also measure the difference from backing plate to backing plate. Serial numbers are nice but can be misread. Measurements don't lie.
