1st, I didnt know where to post this, sorry.

Does anyone know of a way to trace your vehicles history by using the VIN? I think that my car was bought in the tri-state area and would like to see if theres a way to track it back to the original buyer.

Any ideas?

Carfax says that anything pre 1981, your out of luck.

Pony, I paid for searches in Texas and Calif. cuz previous owner told me the car came from Texas. That VIN info. showed the title changed from Calif to texas, so then I got Calif. VIN info. with names of 4 previous owners from calif. Now I have to try to run those names down and make blind phone calls.
If you have any idea where the car might have been, call thatstates DMV office and ask about background title searches. Some states only go back 10 years or so too. Its a pot luck try. Good luck.

What did you have to do to get Calif. VIN info? Any numbers etc., etc., would be greatly appreciated.

They had a form on their Calif.website, forgot the link but in there is form
" Vehicle/Vessel Registration Record Request"
It goes to Dept of Motor Vehicles
Public Operations G199
P.O.Box 944247
Sacramento CA 94244-2470
It took nearly 3 months to get back, cost $5 and had just my VIN and names of people that used to own it, but no dates per se. No addresses either, so now it a blind search I guess.
