Help,
I just got my 302 running and am trying to tune it. It will start fine but when I bring the timing to 10BTC it wants to die and will sputter and spit when I give it a little gas. The 10BTC is done with the vacumn advance disconnected. When I hook vacumn to it it gets no better.
I tryed adjusting the distributor by sound and smoothness and the thing will run and sound fine but the timing mark is no where near the pointer. I am running a HEI.
Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks for all that respond.

Sounds like you need some carb tuning and you are trying to use the timing to over come things.

If your carb is stock (jetting, squirter, power valve etc) and the floats and secondary throttle blades are set properly along with the accel pump you should be able to turn your idle up to 1000 or 1100 rpm (no higher or mechanical advance will start coming into the picture) and then set your initial timing. Next put a vacuum guage on a manifold source and adjust the rich lean mixture screws for most vacuum (keep both screws at the same setting) 3/4 turn out from seated each should get you in the ball park. Now readjust the idle to about 900 and see what happens...

Do you have a matched pair for your balancer and timing cover? The index mark on the balancer was moved 9 degrees counter-clockwise for '69, and a new timing cover was used with a relocated tab to match the new location of the index mark. Some people think they're all the same, but they're not; I see them mismatched all the time (old balancer/new cover, new balancer/old cover). You should also verify the balancer index mark and "0" tab position alignment using a piston stop tool to make sure the outer ring on the balancer hasn't slipped.

Thanks JohnZ,
I do have the old balancer and a new cover. That would explain at least 9 degrees.
Can I just verify TDC and remark the balancer mark to line up with 0?
Thanks

Yup - that'll work; find true TDC with a piston stop and re-mark the balancer with a new index mark aligned with the "0" on the cover tab.
