sounds like a typical case of old! eyeball the idler arm while someone else turns the wheels, if you can see or feel it move up and down, it's bad. next is pitman arm and tie rod ends, then everything else. 30 years is a long time, if it's like mine, everything that moves up there is shot!
I am having the same problem in my 69. New front end. Turns out to be the steering box. I also recall someone saying that the rag joint could also be seriously worn. Along with what jim said thats really all thats left. Hope you find it.
Yeah, if you try adjusting the steering box, make sure you do it with the wheels straight ahead. The gear lash loosens as the wheels are turned. If you adjust them with the box not centered, the gears will bind when going through the center of travel.
