if i were to get a tranny cooler and not run the lines through the radiator would the engine be easier to keep cool?
TH350
2000stall B&M
3.73 gears

i dont think it would show any real difference in coolant temp, but it would defintly make your tranny hotter. chris

The engine probably would run a tad cooler if you were already on the verge of overheating. I noticed the opposite with my car - when I put a 3000 RPM converter in my tranny (generates a lot more heat) I noticed the engine runs about 10 degrees hotter, especially when crusing below my stall speed, like 2000 - 3000 RPM at 40 - 50 mph. This may also be caused by the extra rpms the engine is turning though - I can't really be sure. I am using an external cooler in series with the radiator.

I think you can run the tranny only on an external cooler - you just need a big one.

i noticed in the performance forum you told a guy to run the cooler in the series radiator-cooler then tranny
my question is do you think that if i were to run the series cooler-radiator-tranny would help cool the fluid before entering the radiator thus making the engine easier to cool?

eggersn, that's how I run mine- trans cooler, then radiator. I've got a small block and a TH350 with a TCI 3500 converter and it runs about 180 - 190.
I'm interested to find out if I'm doing it right also.

Trans worst enemy is heat so if you are running the cooler first then the radiator you are heating the fluid before sending it back the the tranny and that is not good.

It depends on the tranny fluid temp. The radiator temp may or may not add heat. You need to understand the tranny cooler capability and heat going into the cooler and then out.

What should the trans temp be to be safe? Or I should ask, what shouldn't it exceed? I've got a pretty typical setup- TH350 with a Trans-Go kit thats been tweaked and a 10-1/2" 3500 TCI converter.
Car is about 3000 lbs., healthy small block and 4.88s.
I just got an Autometer trans temp gauge and was going to plumb it into the return line. Is that correct?

Trans temp guage should be plumbed to the pan since that is where the tranny pulls fluid from.
