Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? I had ran 5 passes with no problems and while going through the pits after a run my car locked the rear wheels and choked down the motor. I was only going about 5 mph, after the car stopped I started it back up and tried to put it back in gear but didn't have any forward gears only reverse. I pushed it on the trailer and took it home, the next day I tried it and had all gears again. It would spin the tires and shift from 1st to 2nd OK in the driveway. I was scared to take it up the road and have it come apart causing more damage that it already had. By the way its a th350. Ant guesses as to what happened?

Pull the cover off of the rear end to see if something has broken and got wedged between the ring and pinion gears. Or, maybe the center pin bolt broke and the pin came out.

Thanks, that was my first thought, but that doesn't explain why I had no forward gears and reverse worked with no problems. And now everything seems to work. It was very hot here Sat. and I made several back to back runs, I thought that the heat might have somthing to do with it. Just guessing I know nothing about transmissions.

I would pull the tranny pan. If the forward clutches are going they can quit hot and work some cool until hot again.

I don't know why it locked up unless there is a lot of stuff in the fluid and the rear planets are having problems, but they work in rev also???

Pulling the tranny pan should resolve at least that mystery,if you don't find anything there I would go with Kyvox's suggestion on the diff.

Eeeeeee. Doesn't sound good. Sounds like something went critically wrong. Forward clutch or planetary gear problem possible. Sprag failure perhaps. I second removing the pan and plan to tear the transmission down and find the problem. If there is any metal debri in there it will only serve to destroy the transmission if not destroyed already. Also if metal debri is found, flush the converter (or replace) and flush the cooler lines.

you said you had no forward gears but you had reverse after the initial lockup. Could it be that "something" in the rearend jammed the gears going forward and when you backed up it dropped out, bsically what KYVOX said.

Thanks for the ideas, I went ahead a pulled the trans. out of the car. I have talked to a local guy that is going to take a look at it. I drained the fluid from the pan and it was clean no metal and didn't seem to be burnt. When this initially happened all forward gears were like neutral (the motor just reved up). Hopefully its not completely ruined.

Guy / Larry:

I never considered the differential. That is definately an easier inspection. I was having a hard time imagining what could cause these things to happen internal to the transmission. Very weird symptom. The lack of metal in the pan is almost confirmation unless the valve body got bound up somehow.
