Thanks for the help. I was thinking about going to a built in regulator, but was afarid of having to mess with the harness to get it working. You say it was pretty simple, I like to hear about as would like to move in that direction and also HEI.Originally posted by MA69CAM:
check to make sure you are getting 12 volts at the distributor where the battery wire goes. I think it is a big red wire. Hope this helps. I changed my system to HEI and the alternator to an internal voltage regulator style. Wasn't hard either. I try to solve the problem before it starts. So far the electrical part has worked.
First thing I did was double and then triple check all the connections. Once you have been bitten by that, you never forget! Thanks for the reply.Originally posted by Snatchin'gears:
Also check for cleanliness and condition of contacts. .....OK I had the plug in the rear of my alternator plugged in but not all the way so it looked connected one time. One time. Uh duh! I feel better now. Don't tell anyone I did that OK? Well I think my battery was bad anyway since it wasn't showing it was charging on the gauge. Don't figure it out for me again. I know. The charging condition gauge might help guide you to where the problem is if you have more than an idiot light for readings.
Thanks for info. I'll check it out as I know I need to move into the 21st ...Originally posted by MytMini:
If you are serious about moving to HEI and an internally regulated alternator then call M&H electrical (http://www.wiringharness.com) and order yourself a new front lamp and engine harness. They will make it up for use with the new alternator and HEI so you don't have to. If you need an electric choke lead they can do that too. Kind of pricey at about $250, but worth every penny. They also can make you a conversion kit to convert your existing wiring to the new alternator if you just need that. They are under $20.
