Some people just have the worst luck. My brother and his wife was getting back a nice tax refund this year and had all kinds of home improvement plans for it. However, 1 week before it arrived they blew a head gasket in their ford taurus...there went $850. Then, when the shop called to tell him the taurus was finished, they headed for town in their other car (1984 olds 88) and it started knocking something fierce. Being the bonehead that he is sometimes he went ahead and drove it in (15 miles or so), got the other car, and almost made it home when something gave way with a loud CLANK and the car would move no more. The strange thing is, it has nothing to do with the engine. It still starts and runs just fine, and the knocking is gone now, but it wont move. No broken u-joints either. The car has a 307 olds/200r4 tranny...the tranny was rebuilt about 3 years ago and has worked perfectly until this point. Is it possible to break the tranny input shaft on an automatic with a 140hp engine? Any ideas on what else it could be?

i bet the torque converter bolts fell out. if the flexplate broke , he wouldn't be able to start it, because the ring gear would no longer be attached to the crank in any way.
i had the torque converter bolts on my vega wagon come loose after i did the v8 swap, and i thought i blew it up. crawled under and took the inspection cover off, and i saw the bolts were all barely holding on to the nuts by a thread or 2. tightened them up, and was good until i parked it 4 months later.
