I'm originally from California so I never had to worry about snow but I just moved out to Omaha, NE to attend Creighton University. A couple of the people out here have advised me to get this undercoating so the salt doesn't eat up my car ('97 Acura).

My car will be parked outside in the elements of this mid-west winters so I was wondering.....

Does anyone have any experience with this?? Is it really necessary??
If it is, where would I go to have this done??

In Nebraska, you definetly need it. Suggest Rusty Jones or similar outfit. Might even consider a local Acura dealer. It's not the snow, it's the salt used to melt it.

since we're on the topic. if i undercoat my car (in NJ i guess its a good idea) what type of coating should i use? will the rubberized black stuff work? one of these weekends i'm planning on taking it to the local car wash and spraying the underneith, so i dont get AS greasy when i work on it, so maybe i'll undercoat it also.

Here is some food for thought.

The cars nowadays have double sided galvanized steel to help in preventing rust. Rustproofing is a huge mark up item for the dealerships. The last couple of new cars that I have bought the dealers have not even suggested undercoating here in Chicago.

How long are you going to keep your Acura?

I go to Omaha on business once a month. Make sure you have a good winter coat with a hood and a warm wool scarf to protect yourself from the wind in the winter. Remember the line from the musical Oklahoma "..where the winds come sweeping down the plains".

I'm not sure how long I will be keeping this car. I don't necessarily like it because it doesn't have any...how can I say?....MARBLES! I would really like to get a 4th Gen preferably w/ an LS1. But after reality sets in, I realize that I would be losing too much money on the deal so it doesn't look like that one will be happening.

All in all, I'll probably be keeping for a good number of years.

About the winters out here, everyone has been saying "You're in for a big surprise!" I'm really gonna need to do some shopping for winter clothes because all I have is sweaters and 2 jackets that wouldn't be considered as satisfactory for these cold temps.

The best think you can do is to keep good wax on it and wash the salt off of it as often as you can. The automatic washes that spay the undercarriage too,thats what you want also keep all your locks lubed up and good wiper blades will make driving in the snow a bit easier. Mike

I agree. Wash your car any time that the temperature gets above freezing. The longer the salt has to work the more damage it will do. Just don't try to wash your car in below, or near freezing temps. And make sure the car is dry before nightfall, or you'll wake up to frozen doors, windows, locks etc.

Keep a good coat of wax on it. Park the car in a heated garage after washing it to dry if frozen locks are a problem. Most undercoatings on a used vehicle will hold in moisture and create rust that is not visible now. Most GM car dealers don't even recommend undercoating or rust proofing on their new vehiicles anymore.

what about like epoxy painting the underneith? i already epoxy paint all the stuff i take off and rebuild, but i want to thoroghly (sp?) prevent rust to the body and frame. i plan on keeping my car for a long time.
