I have noticed a lot of different opinions on Valve Cover Gaskets. Some say RTV, some say Permatex, some say just use Fel Pro Perma Dry Gaskets, some say silicone, etc. Some say tighten with a wrench, some say finger tight? What would you do if you were changning covers on your car? Thanks

For me, I only use cast alluminum valve covers. and only cork gaskets.
I glue the gaskets to the covers with rtv, set em gasket down on the bench and put heavy stuff on em, let em dry all night.
I put a thin coat of wheel bearing grease on the head side of the gasket, and crank the bolts pretty hard.
(NOT recommended for sheet metal covers!!)

I think you'll still get a number of different opinions. I use the FelPro cork with steel core no sealant. They cost more but they're worth it. As far as torque, good question. I've been turning mine down hand tight (not excessive) with a nut driver. That means if your hand is stronger than mine....... well you get it.

If you get fifty different ideas, I'm not sure how you are going to pick what you want to do! Here's my way. I also like aluminum valve covers because the tin ones will tend to dimple in around the bolts. I use 3M weatherstripping adhesive and glue Fel-pro cork gaskets to the cover only. The 3M dries very quickly so you don't have to wait like when you use RTV (RTV works great but if you put the cover on before it dries, the gasket can move.). By only gluing to the cover, if you have to remove the valve covers, the gasket will not get destroyed, and I have taken valve covers off dozens of times without replacing the gasket. As for torque... I use a 1/4" ratchet and only use my wrist to tighten. Not very scientific... but I don't know how better to describe it.

Similar to JimM I only use cast covers. (other than painting heads or mock up) but I use silicone molded rubber with steel core and steel compression limiters. I to only use a nut driver and still over torque everything. :clonk:

I use the cheap chrome plated covers. Take some rough grit sandpaper, rough it up real good where the gasket sets in the cover, a little bit of lacquer thinner on a rag, clean the groove.
3m feathering disc adhesive type 11 part # 051135. Spread that in the groove, just enough to cover where the gasket sits. Use the cheap cork gaskets, hand tighten.
You can take them off and on multipile times.
If you ever want to change gaskets you can get them out because it doesn't harden.
And old engine builder tought me that, I'm 64 and he's quite a bit older then me.
You don't have to wait to set up, instant on.
A lot of you probably have air sanders with discs glued on them, you can take the discs off several months or years later.

I alway use fel-pro thick gaskets, never use silicon, adn alway tighten fairly with a wrench:cool:
