I just finished a complete rebuild on a 69/396 coupe. Vin#12437VN266688 TR 711 Pnt 79 79 (02B)? J140. Can anyone decipher the 02B and the J140? The car had big blk htr, large Dia. anti swaybar, front discs, dual exhaust hangers, and multi leaf rear springs. Without the build sheet is there anyway to tell if it is a true SS? The car also has the factory AC Delco in dash tach. Thanx

The (02B) would be the build date, although I'm not sure what it would be. I'm sure someone else will decipher that part for you. The J140 is an internal Los Angeles assembly plant work code which tells you absolutely nothing about your car! You may want to check above your fuel tank on the drivers side for your build sheet, this is about the only way you will be able to prove the car was an SS. However, with all the other clues you mentioned, it sounds like it very well may be an original SS. It doesn't sound like it has any options to prove it WASN'T an SS. One other thing, count your coils on your hood springs. An SS hood would have used the 28 coil springs, as opposed to 26 on the base cars. Good luck!

02B is Feb (02) build date with (B) indicating the 2nd week.

An X66 code on your trim plate would DEFEINITELY indicate a big block SS car and X11 code MAY indicate a small block SS car. Some cars however didn't have X-codes and this makes it more difficult.

Car SHOULD have 12 bolt and front disc brakes also. The casting number off the engine block would help identify it. It is located DIRECTLY behind the driver's side valve cover on a an engine pad next to the firewall. It is difficult to see (you'll need a flashlight).

Assuming FACTORY air, you for sure DON"T have a 396/375 because they did not come with AC. Post the casting number and we will see if we can help some more with specifics.

Example Casting Numbers:

3935440 (396 all HP levels)
3955272 (396 all HP levels)
3969854 (396 all HP levels (LATE model)

Can also check tire sticker in glove box. Was the car a auto or stick? If your expecting it may be a BB by mentioning the BB htr hose location then you can check the crossmember. If it was a auto then it would have a TH400 which had a totally different looking crossmember compared to what you normally see. The BB 4 speed crossmember has the trans mount hole in a square shape with a corner cut off compared to the usual oval shape. If it is a 4 speed then what side of the steering column does the speedo cable go through the firewall on? VIN on engine, trans? Post the numbers off the pass side front of the rear axle tube. Guages were not madatory but what was the redline? What size swaybar? Can you post the real vin located on top of the dash? The vin you gave is the body number on the cowl tag.

Yes X-actly Right You Are John,

As we all know XCODES were on NORWOOD cars 0NLY (later in the model run) and they started to appear on SOME but not all cars with a build date of 12B. Furthermore all NORWOOD cars built AFTER 12B should have an X-CODE. This would include all NORWOOD cars with the LAST 6 digits of the VIN being 544001 or GREATER.

68 camaros are almost IMPOSSIBLE to document with their trim tags because they will indicate BUILD DATE, PRODUCTION TRACKING NUMBER, MODEL YEAR, MODEL TYPE, ASSEMBLY PLANT, BODY UNIT NUMBER, INTERIOR TRIM, LOWER AND UPPER BODY Color codes and that is IT!!! The 67 trim Plate provides a wealth of information INCLUDING 5 different option groups. The option groups will indicate the presence of such things as factory air, Big Block SS, Small Block SS, Z-28, power windows and on and on!!!!

Thanx to all you motorheads out there. MOre info -- 28 coil hood springs on what appeared to be a factory cowl induction hood
although no flapper door, relay or selenoid
was found. The engine block #is 3992406 which I think is from a pick-up. The tach red line is 5700(yellow)6000(red). The car also has an original tilt steering wheel.
Outside trim consists of wheel lip mouldings,
rocker mouldings and chrome sargents stripes
in front of the rear fender. The rear end
is a 273 non-posi unit that I'm unsure of
its origin but a 12 bolt. Windshield vin#
124379L523569. no factory air no tire sticker in replaced glove box, Original TH400 trans console w/gauge package. Thanx again

What's the #'s off the trans (plate on the passenger side) and the rear axle?
Single or dual fuel lines?
No broadcast sheet above the tank?
Original radiator?

BTW, the tire pressure sticker in 69 was on the driver's door and swaybars are all the same size except for COPO 9737's.

Based on the tach (if it is original):

There are two possibilities:

The tach that has yellow markings starting at 5700 and a redline starting a 6,000 and going to 8,000 came with both a Z-28 and a 396/375 equipped Camaro.

The tach that has yellow markings starting at 5700 and a redline starting at 6,000 and going to 7,000 came with a 396/375 equipped Camaro.

The 396/325 horse and 396/350 horse tach Camaro came with yellow markings starting around 5200 and a redline starting at 5,500 and going to 7,000. This of course (lower redline)is due to the fact that both of these 396 engines came with Hyydralic cams.
