I'm installing a set of Vortec heads on the 327 in my Camaro and I have conflicting instructions on how to torque the head bolts. I haven't put heads on in 17 years so I looked at service manual for my 97 Astro with a Vortec V6. From page 6A-56 it reads:
4. Install the cylinder bolts finger tight.
4.1. Tighten the bolts in sequence to 22 lb. ft.
4.2. Tighten the bolts in sequence using the J 36660 Torque Angle Meter.
4.3. Tighten the short length bolts (11,7,3,2,6,10) 55 degrees.
4.4. Tighten the medium length bolts (12,13) 65 degrees.
4.5. Tighten the long length bolts (1,4,8,5,9) 75 degrees.

The question is should I do the 55,65,75 degree thing, or torque in sequence at 22,44, and 65 ft. lbs.?

I've never torqued heads on anything but V8 Chevy's. That V6 procedure must be for that engine only. I'd go with the 22, 44, 65 lbs/ft method.

I agree just progress in those incriments, starting in the middle of the head and working in a clockwise fashion, don't worry you can't really do this wrong.
