Hello All,

I am looking at some BBC'.s I'm not sure if I should buy one & have it rebuilt. A good friend of mine's dad owns a Machine & Engine Shop. He builds engines and can to the work at a lesser cost. But this is not 1991-1992, it's 2007. Everything is expensive. Which engine option would you choose 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or none of these?

1) Stock 1981 454. Not sure if it's 2 bolt or 4 bolt main. Probably a 2 bolt. This one would be $500 and likely need a rebuild. Apparently it's in a truck and comes with a trans. Maybe a turbo 400. But I have to pull the engine & scrap the truck which takes time & work. http://i8.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/96/ac/31fd_1_b.JPG

2) Nice 454 complete for $3,795 http://www.racingjunk.com/post/859972/454-Chevy-Big-Block-500hp.html

3) 502 w/ aluminum heads for $5,200 http://www.racingjunk.com/post/856251/ad.html

4) 427 for $1,000, needs rebuild http://www.racingjunk.com/post/856642/ad.html

5) 454, 4 bolt main complete, 1978-1990 block needs rebuild for $300. The guy said the crank needs to be cut. My guess is that means it blew a rod & trashed the crank. http://i6.ebayimg.com/07/i/000/96/5f/ee9c_1.JPG

6) 427 complete $ 4,200

I'd like to keep the cost around 4-5 grand. But I may be able to afford 6 grand. I won't know for a few more months. The thing is I don't want to pay 3-6 grand for an engine someone I don't know says, hey it's done. Here's the specs, here's the cam card & dyno sheet. Then I find out it has a cracked block AFTER I put it in my car.

IMHO #6 would make my car worth more it's a date correct 427....The 502, #3 looks awful nice. The 454, #2 has a nice price. But I have a hard time trusting things these days. Especially stuff never fired or dynoe'd. Maybe it's just me.

Guys I know I can't build a BBC for $1,500 and have it complete carb to pan including distributor, wires, plugs, etc. etc. & dyno'ed for $3k. Like I said above, this is 2007, not 1991 or 1992.

My question is what would you guys do? Buy one done for around $4 to $6 k? Or buy a cheap 4 bolt 454 complete carb to pan for $300 and rebuild it top to bottom THE WAY YOU WANT??

All replies and comments are welcomed at any time!!

Thanks!!

Greg

Have one built locally. Better warranty work, if needed. This way, you know what's gone into the engine and its condition upfront.

But then, there's the rule of not selling/buying from friends. Just my thoughts.

My buddy's dad did the finishing work on the last BBC I had. A professional race building shop built it and he finished it/ dialed it in. I should have had him to the whole thing as he found a loose valve on the dyno and caught it before it would get swallowed. That's why I just may buy the $300 454 and have him do it. At least I know what's in it then. And I can buy the parts and have him install it. I'm leaning that way, but I was told by someone else that it would still cost me over 6 grand today for a 454 to make 500-600 Horsepower.

It will cost all of your 6000.00 if you do things right and get ALL of the machine work done and put quality parts in it. I have about 9,000 in mine at 538 hp. I do know it is very durable and has some extras that are nice (teflon coated pistons and complete dyno session included). I would go with the 454 and build it the way you want.

Personally, I would go for the 427 especially if it had the large Oval Port heads which looks like it may have as per pic. Try and talk the price down to around $800. The 427 is by far the best Buck for Hp as it is internally balanced and will accept cheaper priced Flywheels.

That 427 is a "Tall Deck" engine. That means you may have trouble getting headers to fit etc. I would go GM crate or have it built localy. Remember that site you keep looking at is called "Racing Junk", believe it.

I did a #1!

A $300 no trans, 1975 year BB core engine w/ a bad crank and created an about 9.8 to 1 CR., 496 for right at $38 to $4,000!!! Put her together myself!!

And this included new Merlin cast-iron large ovals, new Strip Dom. intake and new Heddman headers too!

Now I know that I can make one some cheaper!!!!

pdq67

PS., per D2k, 550hp at 5500 rpm and 580t at 4500 rpm..

we did a 468 with merlins dynoed at 536 hp for around $5400 top to bottom including about 25 pulls...flaky hickup in the hp curve from 5200-5400 that the builder questioned...after 3 spring changes, and 2 ign boxes, 2 holleys, and a carb shop dominator, we said it was good enough...lmao...
