If it is new and both ends look the same then it does not matter. Now if it used is another story. I put a used one in reversed and it had wear and would tick like a solid lifter, it would not come out and I had to go to an electric pump until I pulled the motor. Buy new and never look back

I have rods that have a shiny spot on each end. measure the rod, you will see no difference on a new rod
here is a picture of a new rod. which end goes next to the cam:D
I meant shiny on the outside of the rod, not on the flat end. Im guessing that the scratched up part was sticking out of the engine and not inside.
