I am about to buy some 17" rims. I installed my neighbors 17 x 9.5" rims on the back. 275/40 tires. Due to my 9" thats narrowed an 1-1/2 2" or so and my so called mini tubs (frame wasnt notched but added a 2" band to tub). His tire was just touching my leaf springs. Within 1/16th. I would like to go with a taller tire as well.
So here are my measurements:
I need a 1/4" away from that spring.
So that takes me to 5.25 BS
How much wider will a 285/40 be than a 275/40.
Every tire manufacture is different im sure.
I should probably go 4.75 BS and be safe?

Man that's gonna make your car look 100% better. You need an exact measurement on your rear end. The standard backspace for a 9.5 inch rim is 5.5 inches, so if your rear is 2" narrower, you will need 4.5 BS on both sides.
