My 68 originally had a vinyl top. I intended to do away with it when I get around to the body work. Found out there are pins and holes under the trim (which is still good). The pins can be easily removed, but how do you fill the holes?

Just a quick poll, replace the vinyl top or go without?

Similarly, I'd like to eliminate all the side emblems. Should I keep the side marker lights or fill them? What about the lower moulding/trim (just above the rocker panels)?

I'm leaning towards keeping the trim and side marker lights, but removing all the rest of the emblems.

Today I say keep the vinyl top. I am wrestling with the same problem for my 69, it came daytona yellow w black vinyl. I keep going back and forth on the issue. Part of me says keep it like it came and the vinyl tops are a fairly rare site these days as everybody seems to ditch them.

You can weld up the holes if you want to. as to the side script etc. leave it off and fill the holes you can always add them later using double side 3m tape if you want..

batboy....
depending on the color of the vehicle, i would keep the vinyl top. (if i had someone here to do it, i would add a vinyl top). we are not replacing any of the side emblems and as for the sidemarker lights, i am keeping those for safety reasons.

Personally I don't like the vinyl top, but I do understand the argument of being different. But that's probably because most others don't like it either.

I would go without the vinyl top- just my opinion though..

As for the emblems, I left mine all off and you wouldnt believe how many guys I hear at car shows tell their girls they had a mustang just like mine when they were younger..

I am now going to add the header panel emblem and fender emblems.. (I dont think i can keep a straight face any longer with these guys at the shows):D

Keep it :D but Im biased ;)

4 say yea and 2 say nay

For those that are saying "keep the vinyl top" I just want to make sure you are aware the original top is currently in tatters. So, a new vinyl top would have to be installed. It's not like I'm thinking of pulling a perfectly good vinyl top off the car.

I'm not restoring the car back to original condition (it has a different engine and trans). I'm converting to disc brakes too. The original color was silver, but I've been thinking of repainting it to Sierra Fawn (even though I don't think that color was actually offered in 68).

I like the cars apperance the way the general built 'em. I putting all my trim and the black vinyl back. The wheels tires and driveline will all be different. As for rust my car won't see the outdoors in the winter like it did in the past , I really don't think rust will be an issue in my lifetime.

Interesting, seems like a lot of folks think the vinyl top should be replaced. My wife agrees. We were at a car show last Friday and saw a 68 with a vinyl top and I have to admit it looked pretty good. That's what started my wife into wanting to go back to the vinyl top. Photo is NOT my car.

I like the vinyl top top with certain color combinations, it's your car and your choice. I also shaved all the logos off my car, I think it looks cleaner. As for the side markers, just one funny thing I want to share, my friend shaved his side markers and at a Super Chevy show, I entered "Street Class" but because his body was modified he had to enter "Modified".

i do not like the vinyl tops. Plus the associated rust is just another thing to avoid... I see how some people like them, but if it were my car, I wouldn't put it on there because of the rust issue...

Is this car going to be sitting outside for the next 20 years? Is the car going to be kept in a garage? I put the vinyl top back on my car. I painted my car and then had the top installed cost me $125 labor and the cost of the top. I don't plan on letting my car set outside for the next 20 yrs though.

ck 2's car is definatly suited for a vinyl top.It definatly depends on the color and look if you shave the markers and emblems I say delete the top. This also depends on the body work involved to be able to delete the top.I have a top ,marker, door handle, emblem delete job here that I've done....
