I need to start thinking about a tranny for my '68, 383 stroker 4 bolt. I want it to be a 5 speed because I'm thinking about taking a few long trips w/my daughter. (It's time she see an OU-Texas game in person, you know, the finer things in life).. Is it possible to take a 4 speed and convert it to 5 speed? Or is that just one more thing that can go wrong? any suggestions on a nice 5 speed to go with this set up? dont know if it matters, but it's a single leaf, 10 bolt, Mosier gears. I'm told by the guy that built it that it has "special" racing bolts and the "good stuff" as far as everything else. thanks for the help.

Tremec TKO or (if a six speed would do) a T56. What rear end ratio do you have now? That would tell you a lot about which way to go.

Mike: the ratio is 3:73. what about a 6 speed??
A 3.73 rear should work pretty well with either a 5 or 6 speed. The LS1 T56's (the easiest to adapt to a SBC/BBC) have a 0.74 5th gear and a 0.50 sixth gear. The TKO-600's have a .64 5th gear ratio. With the 3.73 rear, 26" tall tires and the 5 speed, you're turning 1,850 rpm at 60mph and 2,160 at 70mph. With the 3.73 rear, 26" tall tires and the LS1 T56, you're turning 2,140 rpm at 60mph in 5th, 1,450 rpm at 60mph in 6th (which is probably too low), and 1,690 rpm at 70mph in 6th, which is probably okay.

I put a (LT1) T56 in mine. I'm extremely pleased with it so far. It shifts great and can't beat the 2 overdriven gears for long trips and highway crusing. If you swap one in one you won't regret it. I did mine a while ago before there were "kits" to do the swap. It's much easier now with the kits that are available. Do a search on this site. There have been a few threads on the swap.

Here's a good one:

One thing to watch out for on used T56's if you go that route... T56's usually fail due to hard/bad shifting, not engine torque. If you are comparing the costs, add in $1000 (gears OK) to $1600 (replace all gearsets) to rebuild/upgrade a used T56. The T56 weighs 135lbs, it is NOT fun to R&R from under the car, and it royally sucks to get it installed and then find out the 3-4 shift fork is bent or the 1-2 slider keys are broken, etc.
