Gonna miss that place. Went Tue night for the last time.
Greatest sports arena in the world. Too bad they have to tear it down, but the new stadium will be out of this world.

Nothing stands in the way of "progress" anymore. I remember when they tore down Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. I grew up with that stadium. The RCA Dome in Indy is slated to be imploded in the near future. I went by the new Lucas Oil Stadium on the way to/from Indy Bash this weekend. That is one huge building. It dominates the skyline. I imagine I'll live to see that imploded one day, too.

Doug while I enjoy watching the "evil empire" struggle, I realize it's because they are such a storied ball club, rich in talent over the past century. There is life after the old Yankee Stadium though I can tell you. In Michigan we felt the same way when they began plans to tear down Tiger Stadium. Many people got very sentimental and that's understandable. Some got down right violent and vocal, some tried to stand in the way of progress and called to save the old stadium. We had a police escort to remove home plate and take it to it's new home after the last game. In the last game the last Tiger hit was a grand slam onto the roof of right field. The same roof that Reggie cleared in the 70s all star game.

Flash forward to today, Comerica Park has been in around for 8 years now and it's a wonderful, wonderful new ball park. I recently looked at some of the old pictures of Tiger Stadium and the views from all the obstructed seats. Also the low second deck blocked the view of any ball hit higher than 30 feet or so, it was hard to keep track of what was going on sometimes. Now I see Tiger Stadium for what it was, a dirty, cramped, run down, old stadium that had served us for decades longer than we should have allowed it to. Despite all the negatives of the old stadium however there are still a flood of emotions that come back everytime I drive by it after leaving a Redwings game. It's just sitting there like an old friend. Last month I attended a game at the new ball park and drove by Tiger Stadium to see they had demolished the entire left field, center field and much of the third base side of the stadium. The center field flag pole however still stands flying the red, white and blue at the 440 foot mark that it always stood at, in the field of play as well. I stopped the car and got out. I stood at the wall of what was left of the right field seats and looked up at the light towers that Jackson and 12 others cleared in the 75 years the stadium stood. It was surreal to see it this way. I'd have rather not seen it half way through it's demo.

But I can tell you the new Yankee Stadium while it will meet resistance from old timers and nostalgia buffs, it will be a very exciting place to go and follow the empire as they try to get back on track next year. So there is life after the old comes down. Hopefully NY will not drag this out like Detroit did, sitting on it 8 years before they act. Should've come down immediately. The die hard NY fans will come around once they build a little history in the new stadium, I'm sure of that. And while it looks real doubtful today with the sad state the Tigers are in, if we ever figure out where to hide the pine tar on the mound again in the future maybe we'll be the ones routing the Yanks and sending them home early in the playoffs again, just like 06! But I'm not holding my breath, we've got to win two in a row before we get too cocky here in Detroit. Anytime you guys want Farnsworth or Sheffield back just let us know, we're ready to part with both anytime!

Sean you're dead on. Money doesnt' buy championships like a lot of people accuse the Yankees and George of. They spent plenty of money in 06 and went on to declare themselves as the greatest lineup ever. Then the lowly Tigers embarrased them in the playoffs. The Tigers have also gone out and spent a lot of cash last year to put on paper what everyone speculated would equal a world series ring this year. They got pumped full of themselves and got off to one of the worst starts in history. Tonight they are only 1 or 2 games out of last place. I expect them to be dead last in their division by the time the dust settles.

Team chemistry and staying humble have an awful lot to do with it and the Yankees and Tigers both need more of this. More so with the Tigers as their skipper says chemistry isn't important. Look what the Yanks had from 96-2000, what a dynasty with 4 series rings in 5 years. Toss a record amount of cash at A-rod and since then, nothing.

Agreed 100%, I think thats one of the reason's people hate them, just a ridicules amount of cash spent on them and they have some real jackasses on the team (A-rod, and yes we still hate him in Seattle :D ), plus they have won a lot, everybody hates a winner. I fit into the first description of hater ;) .
I think Torre got the shaft myself, he gets blamed and cut loose for the losses recently, but could you imagine coaching that group of egos? No way I could. His career speaks for itself I figure.

I have a lot of respect for Joe Torre, always have. We now have a Dodgers minor league affiliate in our town, they are in their second year. How knows maybe he'll come to town next season like Lasorda does on occasion? Lucked out and won a contest to job shadow the manager for a day this summer. Had a really great time spending the entire day at the stadium behind the scenes.

Back to Joe, the only issue I have with him is what he did to the Tigers Carlos Guillen in the all star game a few years back. I believe it was actually at our park in Detroit that the game was hosted. Guillen was the only player that Torre didn't get into the game. At the time Carlos was hitting .320 and was an excellent defensive shortstop. His numbers were good enough to start, but he never played. Guess who did? Yep Derek Jeter and he brought his then .230 batting average to the game with him. Jeter played 5 innings and Guillen batting almost a hundred points higher never gets in the game. Derek didn't deserve to be on that team let alone start. Worse yet was Giambi started at first and was hitting around .219 at the time. What a joke the all star game has become. The fans aren't deserving of the priviledge to vote for the line up.

Things haven't changed at the evil empire. I see they didn't make any effort to get Pudge into the lineup. For nothing else than to have his name etched in history. They topped this by taking Jeter out of shortstop with one out to go so he could get an ovation. Ah yes the egos of NY. I guess it really isn't about the team afterall. I remember a time when the Yankees said they don't wear the names on their jerseys because the individual wasn't as important as the team. Seems to have changed.

Never seen the stadium but obviously there is tons of history in it. It looked pretty cool from pictures. On a side note i feel the MLB will never be fair until theres a salary cap. Look at the good it did for all the other sports. The Pirates here in Pittsburgh are a total joke but ofcourse i still stand behind them because they are my home town team but lets face it, they will never be a good team again till theres a salary cap.

Reading the recent TSN article about the new YS, could be trouble for the lower-mid market teams. The revenue alone will exceed the payroll of most teams by far. Some estimates have it at $6-700M/yr.

I guess us fans of the lower tier teams have some solace in that the Yanks have poor front office management and a depleted farm system.

Alex there are a lot of good reasons to stand behind the Pirates. The team has integrity and stands for all things good. They were the first team to truly embrace all players regardless of race or ethnicity. Dodgers started it with Jackie R, but it was Pittsburgh in 1970 with Clemente and the others that really opened the doors for all ball players to compete. Unlike Boston, who 12 years after Jackie Robinson broke the barrier, was still an exclusively whites only team, the rest of the world had woken up well before Boston did. It's well known how the owner of those days felt about it.

Dave I found Hank Steinbrenner's comments today to be quite humorous. He was made about the Yankees missing the playoffs for the first time in 14 years. He said it wasn't fair to the Yankees because they had been put in the Eastern division when the league realigned itself years ago. He said if he were playing in the National league west with the Dodgers, (read this as Joe Torre), they'd be in first place. Without realizing it Steinbrenner admitted to the world today that the Yankees can't even compete in their own division, so somehow that's unfair? Try being a tigers fan for a season or two. Even a Tigers team with spending more money on salaries than anyone else is still only good for last place in the AL central. It's painfull in Detroit. Basically NY and Detroit both aren't very good teams. Keep paying Giambi 21,000,000 a season, make that 22,000,000 next season. That's a lot of dough for a seen better days player.

I am a White Sox fan and we went through that in 1990 when the Old Comiskey Park which was built in 1910 and the oldest park in the majors until that point was torn down. In 1991 the new park opened across the street. The Chicago Stadium (Madhouse on Madison where the Bulls & Blackhawks played) was torn down after 1992 (I believe it was the oldest Hockey arena and insanely loud in there). The United Center is a great place though. Very nice!...Then another stadium I loved Soldier Field gets blown up internally mini-implosion style, they keep the outside Greek Columns & Pillars and make the inside look like a fish bowl. Sorry but I liked the old Soldier Field better and I always will. The new Comiskey park since renamed US Cellular Field has been remodeled & renovated as it was outdated from day one. The place looks beautiful now, but I miss the old ball yard man. Those roof shot home runs were cool!! My son will never forget his first ever game in 2006. I saved the ticket stubs which showed 2005World Series Champion White Sox on it them. It was an interleague game against the Astors which the White Sox swept in the fall classic the year before. My son was hoping for a grand slam and he got it late in the game which propelled the team to victory in extra innings if I recall.

Here's a little baseball trivia for ya. Name the only 2 teams to have led their division wire to wire and then go on to sweep the World Series. One is the 1927 Yankees. The other is the 2005 Chicago White Sox. I will miss Yankee Stadium too. I always wanted to go there but never made it. The closest I got was standing outside Legends Field in Tampa, FL in 2004. The Yankees are full of rich history and tradition more than any other team. Even a White Sox fan like myself admit that. Good Luck telling that to a Cubs or Red Sox fan though.

BTW, aren't the Mets getting a new stadium in 2009 as well? or is that 2010?

Alex...Don't feel bad about the Pirates....Try living in Baltimore with the Orioles! I have lived in the area for about 10 years and the O's have been a basement team the whole time. Things will turn around when the owner sells the team to someone like Cal Ripken. It's pretty bad when you go to a game and people are wearing "Free the Birds" t-shirts.
I must say that Orioles Park at Camden Yards is one of the nicest parks I have ever been to.

Scott

Monday Night Football.....Ravens and Steelers! :hurray:

I'm an Oakland A's fan. We have one of the lowest payrolls, and we've been competetive pretty consistantly. Great farm club, and a good perspective on the game. The Yankees stadium might be missed, but I love when a trillion dollar a year team doesn't make the playoffs and you can hear the owner crying foul. Music to my ears.

Oakland A's tickets are as low a $8 a piece, sometimes lower. No elitist ball club here.

BTW, what happened to the salary cap in baseball? That was a joke.

Mets are also getting a new stadium next year. So are the Jets and Giants.

But nobody cares. Its all about "The Stadium".

I will miss it. I was fortunate to have been there as a kid before the major renovations. Left - center field was 463 ft. if I remember correctly! And the 3 monuments in the playing field! Went to an old timers game and saw the likes of ****** Ford, Elston Howard, Phil Rizzuto, Yogi Berra and many others. When my Dad was a kid he saw Babe Ruth play there.

It is a great stadium. I wish they could have kept it going.

Gabriel if you get a chance you need to see the A's play in Tempe during spring training. I've really enjoyed the games I've attended at Spring training field. Great little stadium and when the big hurt steps up to the plate you're almost too close to the action. That guy is huge!

A side note to Yankee stadium. I noticed the other day in a picture of Babe Ruths last at bat there, the right field fence down the line was only 296. 296! Anyone can hit a ball that far. I used to joke that the line at the old Tiger stadium was 315, it's easy hitting a ball 315. No wonder so many Yankee greats hit so many home runs. Any batter would love to spend his career in a short fenced field like that.

South Side, it's looking like that rain out between the Sox and Tigers is going to matter? Twins took it to them. Maybe Sox will be playing for their season on Monday after all.
