Just got an email from "girlfriend". she states her sister has a friend that states he will sell me his '76 Corvette for $10,000. She states it's in "Mint" condition (yeah, right) he heard I was a car collector. Now, this sounds a little crazy to me. Is that a desireable year for a Corvette? I can't imagine any corvette that is close to mint going for that low. Certainly there's more to the story and I'll keep you guys posted... UPDATE: just went and looked on Ebay.. surprised to see that may be about the going rate.
is that just the market being down? I would only get it if it were a steal.

Mark, I typically value 74'+ vettes the same. From 74'-82', it seems, in my eyes that the value of them is not srong at all. With the exception of 78' pace cars you get get mint to near mint vetts for low to mid teens.

That doesn't seem like an exceptional deal unless it was a low mileage survivor?

To answer your questions, I would say it isn't a desireable year. They are everywhere!

my brother has a 74-6 stingray 1 owner #'s car. for 5500. 10K? better be something REAL special.

I agree. The 73-82 style aren't worth much at all unless they're something really special and in mint condition. Usually the interiors are pretty beat, engines are nothing special in those years and the majority were automatics. Pretty boring cars as far as Vettes go. I've seen drivable "project" cars sell for as little as $2500-$3000.

Do some more research.
Mid 70s vettes are super cheap. Under 10k is common. Heck, look at mid 80s prices, you'll be surprised. Lotta performance for the buck, just not "fast".
They rattle & squeak themselves to death - be prepared if you look & drive a few.

One more thing,
you like Porsches?
Look at 928 or 928S.
They were big time $ back then. Now, cheap.
I hear they are hard to get parts for though, that'll be the price you pay now.....

I'm a long time Corvette owner/aficionado. 1976 Corvettes are fine cars, but are among the least desirious from a collector perspective unless they have extremely rare options and are survivors. Check several websites and you should find that $10K is fair to high (depending upon condition). Many 74 to 77 Corvettes have been modified by their owners becuase they are relatively inexpensive (for a Corvette).

I don't know vettes, but I saw a very nice driver at Sears Outlet a few months ago. (looked like survivor) early 70ish roadster with 454 and 4 speed. I thought it looked pretty darned nice. (not mid year "slobber all over myself" nice, but very nice) Ballpark what would one like that be worth?

early 70's with a BBC and 4 spd are the C3's rising in value but they can be all over the map from high teens for driver/restoration candidate to big bucks (30-50) for full resto jobs. It depends on the year, options etc. Small block cars can be fairly cheap (there is a '70 SBC needs restoration but complete and original for 9k on craigslist here)
I do think though that most prices of collectible cars may fall a bit since all that cheap money from home equity loans has dried up. Go to the corvette forum to get an idea on prices. Those guys there are pretty straight shooters what you should pay for a vette.

If my wife had been a bit meaner to her ex, I could have a 1969 roadster with 400 HP 427 tripower, 4-sp and air sitting in my garage. The car is a basket case, but the original block is still with it. My brother-in-law owns it now.
