I have my 67 camaro in my sig completely stripped of all the drivetrain, front clip/subframe and want to go through and clean up the underbody/firewall to make it look nice. I was just wondering if anyone had any good ways about doing this because from the looks of it it will take a while and be pretty sucky. The bottom is all oily and greasy and it has a factory type of undercoating but no rust. Also what do you guys recommend undercoating it with?

Ill second the oven cleaner.

Go to Home Depot,..buy a gallon of WD-40, a spray-bottle, a plastic sheet, some nylon gloves, plastic scrapers, and a bag of rags.

Soak the the stuff on day one. Soak it again on day two. On the third day soak again and start removing the gunch. It will be real easy to remove but it's messy.

Good luck!

just got done doing this and i gotta hand it to the oven cleaner and some good scrubbing:D i used a scotch brite pad on the real gunky stuff and it worked great. afterwards i used 3M's rubberized underbody that you can buy in spray cans at autozone. works well and feels tough, just make sure to apply in light coats or it takes forever to dry:thumbsup:

Get a rotisserie and turn it on its side. Then start cleaning. Strangely, I've found that red Brakeclean brake cleaner will loosen the factory rock hard undercoating. Scrape w/ wooden wedges. Then do it again.

Very nasty dirty work, sorry.

Its not just cosmetic. Especially if that car is actually from MI w/o rust, clean the crap out of it and make sure the rust doesn't start!

well got some of it done and i'd have to say the best way is to scrape off as much gunk as you can with a scraper, then a air angle grinder with a wire wheel on it. The factory undercoating on in mostly scraped off with the scraper though...and the wire wheel gets everything off and does a good job of getting into the nooks and crannies

i used to sandblast at a monument shop we sandblasted metal all the time if you use a light sand like silica sand it should make it real nice it dont hurt rubber if you dont hold the end of wand on the rubber a cheap used portable sand blaster is worth it

i used a makita grinder with a wire wheel attachment .It went really fast .Be sure to where googles and old clothing .This weekend i'll go back undeneath with a pressure washer .Fine clean it.3m 08883 is a good under coating or duplcolor paintable .Remember some of these product don't dry .If its not paintable it stays in a tar like state .I'm acutually going to use raptor gaurd or gator gaurd bed liner coating on mine .good luck

It is a suck job, and no matter what you'll get dirty but once you start just go for it.

I used a side grinder with twisted wire cup.
POR 15, then chassis black. With it staying in the garage most of the time, I should be good until about the year 2050 or so.

I found a good trick after a City tar truck blew a hose next to my truck. That crap was everywhere! I took it into a shop for a estimate to take it off, and it was around 350.00 bucks. Before the estimate the guy done a small spot with RM brand Prepsol cleaner. The tar melted away very fast and it left no residue. I believe this is a little stronger than WD 40, but the idea is to get it off. I went to the paint shop, and bought a gallon and cleaned the truck myself for about 25.00 and a couple of hours.
