Gary, I went to the interview and aswered their questions. THey would be crazy not to hire me. If I dont say so myself, I was talking about stuff the gentlemen that were interviewing me didnt know what I was talking about. I answered all their questions, I "dressed for success" and tried my best to be very cordial.

Harley, Give them a few weeks to and call them back. Tell them your checking on your application and interview and wanted to know if they have filled the position yet. If not tell them thank you very much and that you look forward to hearing from them about the job.

If they have ask if you might be able to get an explanation of qualifications or other things you did not meet. Tell them your fresh out of the Navy and need feed back to assist you in your job search and anything they can provide would be appreciated.

Also consisder that if it's large Co like the one I work for it's not uncommon for them to go a month or more before people hear back from them, it's the nature of the beast where I work. Nobody can ever explain why it takes so long but after 911 defence contractors and other like them have to check out and full fill many obligations to the Gov before hiring or even making an offer.

No job yet guys. Im seeing 18-25 yr olds with NO experience and a 6 month class getting hired over me.

I have lost all my steam. I will sell the Camaros, the Motorcycle, the pick-up, the house, the furniture....
I am pathetic. I cant even get a minimum wage job at a parts store...OREILLYS! I applied for a job and a 17yr old kid that thought my car was a barracuda go hired at 13.50 and hour.
I am a pathetic loser. I cant even feed my kids. In a few weeks, I wont even be able to keep a roof over their heads.

DUDE !!!!! It's only been a few weeks......grab your boot straps and pull hard !!!
You didn't get the job at O'Riellys because you are over qualified and they KNEW you would leave when something better came along. Obviously the 17 yr old doesn't know any better and could end up staying there the rest of his life.
You didn't drown in the Navy, for crying out loud, don't drown in your own self-pity on dry land.
When does your Navy pension start ?? Won't that be enough to make ends meet till the right job comes along ??

Im not going to get a Navy pension. I got out, not retire. I wont get a retirement. Im am thinking I should have stayed in. I wasnt happy in the Navy tho. Thats why I got out. I have applied everywhere. I am an 11yr Navy Sailor, and Veteran of 2 wars and 3 campaigns. I wished I could find a good job.

Yeah, it probably wasn't the best time to leave a secure position, but that is hindsight now. Unfortunately there are millions of people with 11+ year careers in all different fields looking for jobs and there aren't many to be had. The economy just plain sucks. I know it's hard to keep a positive attitude, but it makes living a little easier if you can. I've been trying to get out of trucking for 2 years now and can't. I'm trapped by my age and zippo job opportunities for basically entry level jobs to start over in a different field. I don't like it either, Harley, but it is what it is for now and we just need to keep putting one foot in front of the other and move ahead. You might need to consider relocating for a time for employment. One of the other guys who responded here said there is work in Nashville. Might be worth checking into. As a former military person, who has moved before, maybe another move now will get some stability under your feet until things improve and you can get back to where you want to be. You say you need to take care of your family and I agree. Maybe that means letting go of your desire to be in OK for a while to accommodate their needs. Being depressed and negative isn't helping them either. Try to foster a positive attitude.

Harley - what job boards are you using? Have you tried craigslist? are you getting any military job placement assistance? Even if you are not eligible for unemployment pay you can use their placement resources. Mitch is right about having the right frame of mind and if it means the difference in getting by, toys (your's not the kids) have to take a back seat to food and a roof. Facts you may not have known when you made the decision to leave the Navy - Finding a new position for the avg professional is taking 6 months or more. This is becoming a minimum, the govt is now extending unemployment benefits a second time. And in Nov it was projected 25k jobs would be done away with across the US, actual numbers ended up being more like 75k. That's not only that many new people out of work, that's jobs that don't exist. Not trying to push bad news on you but it's things you need to know and accept now that you are in the job market.

I know you want to be near home in OK but that is limiting your opportunities, being willing to relocate will help greatly. You might have followed some of Travis' threads on his dealings with employment. He seems to find work rather quickly but he's all over the place. I have been out of work for 5 months but not looking more than 30 miles from my house.

If you haven't been doing it, look to civil service, the defense industry and the post office as well as any place that gives preference and points for being former military.

Another thing they say is if you worked a 40 hr week when you were employeed then you need to put in 40 hrs a week looking for your next job...

Hang in there, get your banking and housing issues straightened out and keep plugging away...

A friend of mine just retired from the Marine Corps and is drawing unemployment right now. He's having a hard time looking for good work. Have you looked into that?? It's tough I know... I went from taking home close to 5K a month before I retired from the USMC to now taking home close to 3K. of course my retirement pension helps make up for the difference. :beers:

Harley - I am a retired Coastie. When I retired, I took a job with Fedex "until something better came along." Well, 9 years later I'm still with Fedex, working on that 2nd retirement.

Is there a Fedex or UPS station anywhere close to where you live? This time of year they are looking for help. Just an idea. Could lead to a part time or full time job. Best of luck, Shipmate.

I have applied everywhere for just about every job in a 250 mile radius. I am not getting any replies. I just learned today that Boeing isnt going to hire me. I am no longer under consideration. Thanks to you guys that have sent the pm's and sent other gratitudes. You know who you are. I appreciate it. I have been positive around the kids guys. When I am by my self I feel kinda down. Ill be ok. I just wished people would quit looking over me and hiring other people. I am ready. It just stupid.

Chins up guys.

Harley,
We all know it's bad out there, now being Christmas time and New Years it doesn't help matters. I know things will work out for you and it may be after the New Years as everyones watching their end of year bottom line but it WILL happen. Keep your chin high.

We just found out today one of two production lines are going down this Friday until after New Years. OT was cut and most don't see 40 hours now every week... I hope things take a turn for the good soon.
I know it will.

My 30 year old son found himself unemployed a while back. He was a manager of a quick lube and an old drain plug fell out and the engine blew. Fired! Couldn't beg his way back in. So he goes to a temp agency, he's over qualified for everything. He tells them he need to work, find him something. Gets a call for interview before he gets home. Goes to interview and shows his resume. "You're overqualified." Please understand I really need a job, overqualified or not I need to work. He got the job, less money but he's working. After a bit a management op opens up on his shift, he applies and gets it. All because he could convince the interviewer that he needed a job. I hope you can try his strategy. I wouldn't hesitate to play the military card either.

I have tried that strategy. nI have applied at temp services. I have applied everywhere. Maybe it will look up after xnas and new years.
I hope so. I really wanted that boeing job. I really wanted that boeing job.

OK Sailor...time to do some listening!
Just to let you know, I also got out of the Navy after a four year hitch. I was married, went back home to Wilmington, NC, found a job working in a A/C & R supply house. Was going to school under the GI Bill. I came home one evening and found out there wasn't any fuel for the heater and I was broke. Now sure I could have called Mom to bail me out, but I figured there had to be a better way (Pride). Well to make a long story short....I went back in the Navy and stayed for 22 years. I have been in your shoes!

I'm not suggesting this...but it is an option.

Here are a few questions?
Where in OK do you live? (town).
Are you willing to locate to a larger town?
Is there a Military base near you, that you that might have job openings?
Did you use your last Navy move to get back to OK?

I know one of the main reasons for getting out was wanting to be closer to home....but if moving a few hours away is the difference between working or starving....make the decision where you stand.
When I retired, I said that I would never move further north than the NC/VA border.....I now live in the Baltimore, MD area......working,feeding my family, sending my daughter to college. See where this is going?

Perhaps someone here who has experience working Resumes could take a look at yours and give some advice? Anyone interested in taking a look?

So....yes you can draw unemployment while looking for work!

I will be moving the rest of this conversation to PM or email.

Keep your chin up Harley...this will work out!

Harley -- at the risk of sounding like an armchair psychiatrist, I firmly believe that keeping a positive attitude towards your current situation is the best thing in the long run. Yea, I know its easier said than done, but the last thing that you, and more importantly your family, need is to create an environment where its looks like one has given up. Maybe things will shake loose once the holidays are over.

In any event, my sincere best wishes to you and your family for a safe and happy holiday season, and my hopes that you situation improves in the very near future.
