I want to create a "full time" cowl induction setup. I plan to remove the snorkel from the air cleaner base and fix the cowl flaps at the back of the hood so that they remain open. I saw one done like this years ago and it creates a clean look with the snorkel removed. Its a given that that I have to cut the snorkel off, grind, wield in a patch and paint.

Right now, I have a non cowl induction, stock, single snorkel air cleaner (snorkel points to driver side).

My question: Is the base of the cowl induction air cleaner, the same as the base of the non cowl induction air cleaner?

I ask ask because I am going to cut the snorkel off anyhow, so if the base is the same, there's no need to buy another one. Then, I can just buy the extension and rubber seal and cleaner top.

Anyone see a problem in doing this?

Don't know if my factory style cowl hood set up is what you are looking for but its basically full time, as I have removed the flap and replaced with a mesh screen with the outer flap trim , fastened down to hood. Basically keep birds and large bugs out.
This feeds the engine cowl air cleaner with the seal around it. The orginal cowl air cleaner base does have the snorkel with heat valve but its not of any use with headers unless I attache the aftermarket shield. Nothing fancy.

If you need photos, let me know, its easy to do but you need a cowl hood and air cleaner set up for your carb.

My main question is whether or not the base portion of a non-cowl induction air cleaner is the same as a cowl induction air cleaner. I am trying not to spend $$$, that I don't need to spend on a cowl induction air cleaner.

I dont' think the base for a 4V carb is the same as cowl base as the cowl seal has to fit or come close to fitting the hood. Maybe someone can chime in here that knows.
For one thing, the cowl base is a low profile air cleaner made to fit Holley and Qjets.

The carb in the engine now is a Holley 600 vac secondary and the stock non cowl induction air cleaner fits that perfectly. That's the thing that made me wonder if I needed to buy a cowl induction air cleaner.
Like I said, its the air cleaner lower base that the cowl hood fits the seal on so I think you need to begin with this first. I would try to locate someone close to you that may have this set up and allow you to trail fit but I don't think you have the hood clearance for this without a cowl hood. Do careful measuring here , before closing the hood. Pay attention to carb air cleaner hold down bolt, length.

I don't know the answer to your question, but if you post a picture of the stock air cleaner, I can try to compare it for you.

I did what your talking about a few months ago. I have the regular cowl hood, so I had to take off the extended ring that raises the height of the rubber seal. Here's how it looks. I'm happy with it and don't notice any problem with running it like this.

Darin,
My orig. cowl induction air cleaner base measures 16 9/16ths across.

About the same here, with a 2 1/2'' pan depth and a center dome about the same. This is the low profile base. I am not running the upper base extension. You also will need the sealing gasket metal hat, slips inside the air cleaner base.

Hey Funbnme,

Nice motor, I'm trying to go for the same look with the cowl air cleaner.
How did you remove the snorkel of yours and did you fill the area?
Id rather have the cowl air cleaner look but do not care for the snorkel hanging off the side of the base.

Think he has no choice with that compressor on the pass side. I would like to know how also. Looks cleaner this way.

Looks like the cowl induction and no cowl bases measure out within a 1/8 inch of one another. So it looks promising (at least right now) that I can use the stock non cowl-induction base... buy a new air filter, cowl induction air cleaner lid and hood seal, then make my mods to the snorkel and I am good to go.

Thanks for the help... I will post back with results.
