67 R/S powerglide upgrade question

I have a 67 R/S -- 327/275 automatic. The car doesn't really have that get up and go with a powerglide .... I've been told either do 1 of 2 things ...

1) Get the engine apart and machined,cam new carb --something like that my uncle told me would be around 3K
2) Put a differnet tranny in --- somebody suggested a th-350

I'm leaning more towards the transmission right now. Does anyone think a Th-350 would do the trick ?

What is a decent price for a rebuilt transmission and where would you look online to get one.

I figured i'd start there and see what happens.

I would look locally for a trans builder. Why? because if you have a problem with the tranny, you have someone near to you that's going to make it right, and you don't have to pull the tranny and ship it back to somewhere else to have it fixed. Shoot, you can get a TH350 at most of the major parts stores. You're forgetting about the four speed, though. Fun factor is through the roof.

TH350s are pretty easy to find. Just make sure it is for chevy and not Buick/Olds/Pontiac. Find out what rear gears you have also. That way you'll know what to expect with TH350 over the Glide. You may also want to consider a 200R4 which has O/D and a deeper first gear than a TH350 but will bolt in. I am in to process of losing my Powerglide too!

If you can't find a local deal on a 6 inch tailhousing TH350, Summit sells them for $660.
You'll have to buy a torque convertor for it also. Summit sells it also, 1800-2200 stall for around $180.

If you are going through the trouble of swapping it to a TH-350, go the extra step and use a 200-4R. You can reuse the existing driveshaft. If you use a 700-R4, you will need a shorter driveshaft. The 200 can handle large amounts of torque, but before you replace the tranny, what gear ratio are you running? I run a PG and I have no complaints AT ALL in the power department. I can light my tires up at will. I run a 4.10 gear so the highway suffers A LITTLE, but it rarely sees the highway anyway. I plan on swapping in the 200 so I can make it more versitile. I drive it very often as it is, but I want to be able to take it on long trips. The 200 is a great tranny and can be built to handle GOBS AND GOBS of torque. More than any street car would need. With the right converter and 200, you will have loads of tire smoking fun.
