Coil Mounted in the Car?

The previous owner of the car I bought installed the MSD coil along with the MSD Ignition box in the car instead mounted on the interior firewall behind the glove box. What are you guys thoughts on having the ignition mounted inside the car? Is having the coil and the ignition box safe to have in the interior of the car or should I be relocating this to the engine compartment? My car is basically a street car for going to cruises and it does make the engine compartment cleaner looking, but I want to make sure it is safe as well. thanks

I'd avoid mounting the coil in the horizontal position though. The coil is filled with oil to keep the windings cool. Mounting the coil on it's side exposes the windings and can lead to coil failure.

I had the MSD box bolted to the pass toeboard and ran the wire harness, after I extended it, through a grommeted 1 1/4 inch diameter hole and it worked fine.

As dnult suggests, keep the coil vertical as the oil cools the windings.

No offense to my boys here but the MSD box looks better anywhere than on the passenger side firewall. There are also other coil options that allow you to mount them horizontal. The picture above with the coil and MSD box under the glove box are both against the MSD instructions. The coil issue has already been discussed but the box can collect moisture that way. If it's a drag car application then it probably doesn't matter. If you want reliability for a cruiser then I wouldn't do it that way.

thanks for the replies!

With the voltage developed by the box and coil, i just wanted to make sure that it was safe to have mounted in the car. Now that you guys mentioned it though, the coil was mounted horizontally, will have to look into changing that!
