The power steering box on my 69 was leaking where the pitman arm connects, so I replaced it and bled it. Everything works fine except there exists a repetitive spot where the wheels are hard to turn (even with the tires jacked off the ground). It occurs about every 180 degrees. When the hard spots occur, you can see the steering column (inside the car, where it meets with the steering wheel) move slightly upward from the pressure being placed on it.

I didn't verify that the rag joint was installed exactly the same as it before and am thinking it may be the problem (or at least part of it). When I had the rag joint removed and placed it on a flat surface, two of the bolt holes (that are 180 degrees apart) were elevated by about 1/4" to 3/8" relative to the other holes. I used the elevated holes for the "pins" and the other two for the bolts, but may have installed in inverted and rotated (relative to how it was installed before I replaced the box).

Help would be greatly appreciated. I've done a lot of work on cars before, but not steering box related. :) Thanks!

I know in the 68 AIM there is a page that has specifics for the rag joint spacing and steering column shimming etc. If you loosened your steering column to remove box then you maybe experiencing binding, and realignment and assuring your ragjoint/coupler are installed and seated correctly may need to be checked

Some older threads cover this in detail...ofdten due to tightening mounting points in the wrong order or the end float on the steering box is a shade too tight.

It seems to me that you don't have your steering column aligned to your steering gear. It is very important that the steering column shaft and the steering gear input shaft be pointing exactly at each other. This paper is long but it has everything you need to know in order to attach your flexible coupling correctly.

I agree there is something misaligned due to the slight "binding" in each rotation. Thanks for the link to the doc, hopefully reading and applying it will resolve the issue.
