Hi guys: I was lucky enough recently to purchase a standard bore 400 #509 block. So this means that i am presently converting over all my reusable parts from my 355. These parts include carb, rpm airgap, comp hydraroller, rev kit, 195 afr heads and other small misc.parts. I want to go with 5.7 rods and hypereutecic pistons(preferably .020 over) and will be studding the mains. My biggest problem seems to be selecting pistons. This is because i machined my afr's down to 64 cc's to obtain 10.5 compression on my 355. Now i realize i need to go to a dished piston to obtain a pump gasfriendly motor. The best that i have come up with so far is through summit, sealpower h16cp30 which will put me at 10.841:1 compression with afr's head gasket recomend, felpro #1014 .039 thick and zero decking the block. Can you guys tell me if this will live on 92 to 94 octaine. If not,any suggestions on piston, gasket, deck combos that would work would greatly be appreciated. I will be reusing the comp xr294hr cam also.
I used alot of info from you guys on this site especially ,Greg O and Eric68 to build my 355 which ran a best of 11.96 at 112, so more of your expert ideas would greatly be appreciated. Thanx K.D.

That compression will be good with a 294 cam. My 406 is running a 285* cam on 106*LDA with 10.83:1 compression, and the DCR is between 8.0 and 8.2:1. Cranking compression is 210PSI, which is OK for pump gas with aluminum heads w/ good chambers.

I went with the SRP pistons this time. I zero decked but my AFRs are still 68cc and I ended up with 9.99:1. You would be around 10.4 with these I think. Check their website but I believe they are either 18 or 20cc dish.

A little more $$ than the hypers, but money well spent in my book.

You're gonna love that 406!

the srp's are 565 bucks without rings at jegs,it's between them and wiseco's at around 500 bucks with rings on the net.these prices are for a 383 with 6"rods and 64cc heads,i didn't see what you need in the catalog, but i'd bet they are around 500 bucks without rings.
travis has had good luck with the wiseco's,and i have yet to hear a bad review.if i can keep the .040 bore i have now,i'll consider the srp's,but if i end up at .060 i'll either use the wiseco's or find a standard bore block that check's out.still up in the air for now,as my friend snuck 4! engines into the machine shop a few days ahead of me(dammit!).so i have a few weeks until i know what exactly is going to happen.if i don't use my current block for the 383,i have enough extra parts to build a 350 as either a spare motor,or to sell to recoup some of the $$$ involved in the project.

check summit they sell the wiescos pretty cheap and the rings come with them as for as forged goes wiesco would be my choice.i know they have flat tops but not sure about the dish pistons

Thanks :D glad your 355 ran hard . . .

Don't forget ProTrue . . . these are Wiseco's "sportsman" version of their top-of-the-line pistons. You can get them with rings for just over $500 at www.dirttrackthunder.com.

They sell the ProTrue with Hastings plasma moly rings -- a nice ring, I've used them in my motor for 4+ years now.

I would take an "inexpensive" forged piston over hyperutectics any day . . . they're a much more durable piston IMO.

Hi guys: I really appreciate all the replies and am considering everthing you suggested.I tried to find the Srp pistons that Carl C and Greg O suggested, but could not find them on the srp web site.Would guys have a part # for them? I know its alot to ask, but i am getting nowhere. THanks K.D.

I used the Pro-true forged on my 406. Don't have the number here but they are a 20cc dish. With my 64cc heads I am at 10-1. Price wise they were not that much more than hypers when you consider you get good rings with them.

Go here SRP catalogue

Look at the bottom of page 6. I made an error though, they are -21cc or -16cc.

The 16cc gives you 10.4:1 but are 6" rod only.

The 21cc yield 9.89:1 and are for 5.7" rods.

Hope that helps.

If that's an all factory block the deck is going to be high The pistons will be near .035 in the hole. This drops compression fast. If you want to go with that you may be able to use flat top's
