You young guys and new wave types can love your powder coat, bt I'll take CHROME! Monday, this load is off to the plater.
Image

Hood hinges & springs, fender supports, upper hood latch, alt strap, all pulleys, coil bracket, dist hold down, throttle arm and rod, and all related hardware. Can't wait till they come back all shiny!

Just watch those hood springs. They'll stiffen up when chromed. They should work fine, but don't be too agreesive with the hood or you might put a buckle in it.

Jim,
Chrome is nice I agree. I must ask you why would you have a few of those parts chromed when you can probably buy them already chrome for less than it will cost to plate them? Now if the chrome where you live is cheap I totally understand but, here in California chrome is EXPENSIVE (as with most other things). I know you can buy that alternator bracket, coil mount, pulleys, fender to core support braces, and alternator fan already chromed.

Let me know what you find out, if it is cheap maybe you will become my best bud and I can send a bunch of stuff out to you and you can have it chromed for me :D I have a big load of stuff to get chromed for my current project (can't buy any of it) so I have no choice but to re-plate it.

Royce, I'm gonna email that pic to the chrome guy and get the $$ in writing before I ship em off. I will be comparing prices for new chrome parts. He will for sure do the pulleys cheaper than I can buy new, all ready checked. When I get em back, I'll resurrect this post and put up pics of the finished prodoct. This guy's in the booies, and the epa ain't as bad as they are on the left coast

Chrome looks cool until it lets you down. I used to have chrome accessory brackets until I got tired of replacing them from breaking all the time. Your hood springs will eventually do the same thing. Chrome sets up hydrogen embrittlement in the metal and makes it weak. I would not chrome anything under stress IMO.

New wave type? Hmmmmm. Watch that chrome hood spring is all I can say. I'll take my easy to clean powder coating and ceramic coating fro my headers and exhaust. I'll also stick with the silver zinc wash on my hood hinges and springs along with all the nuts, bolts, clips, etc.

Hey Jim:
If you wouldn't mind posting an estimated price for that stuff when you get it, I'd appreciate it. I have some stuff I was thinking about chroming as well and some of the price quotes I've gotten are way out of line in my opinion. Maybe if the price you get from your plater is right - we could use him as a "go to" guy when people on the forum are looking for a chromer...

Thanks!!

I agree that chroming is not cheap but the quality you get from chromer to chromer is like night and day. Just an FYI, the fender braces can be purchased for around $25 pr, the hood spring for $20- $25. I had my hinges done for $150 each. Bolts were chromed for a dollar. A note on the hinges. If these are not disasembled for chroming the process will let current jump over the parts and the deep crevises and areas around the fasteners will come out unchromed -a pee stain color if you will. It does not look bad but just so you know. Much better than trying to find someone to reassemble. Though I had to wait and wait for my stuff, he did a nice job. I have pictures but not sure how to post them. Good luck.

ok, got the prices and they look tasty. Another memnber here (MR454SS) has used this shop, and did NOT reccomend them. As I'm not building a show car, I'm gonna give them a try.

$$ as follows:

Hinges $75 ea, Springs, 10 ea.
Support rods $20 ea. (10 less than new chrome)
Distributor hold down and bolt $6
Alt. fan $8, Pulley $4, washer 30 cents, nut fifty cents
Power Steering Pulley $15, nut fifty cents
crank pulley $30, crank power steering $18
Alt adj arm $22
Ciol bracket $4, screw 30 cents
Hood hinge bolts $1 ea x 8
Throttle rod, arm, pin $8 for all of it
upper hood latch $26 for all of it.

Best as I can tell, all prices are cheaper than new chrome parts if available, would cost. 5-6 weeks to get it done.

I'll let you all know when I get em back.

Does anyone here have an idea what it would cost to have a set of wheels chromed? I want the 17in TT 2's but they dont make them in chrome finish so i though about just haveing them done. ANy suggestions?

hmmm.... buy Cragars instead? or call some platers and get some quotes, maybe some guys will give some recommendations in the southeast. MR454SS mentioned a shop he liked to me, in Tennessee, but never got back as far as exactly who. I'll pop u a pm on the shop I'm using, but until I get my stuff back, hopefully on time, as quoted, and done right, I won't be mentioning them publically.

young guys or new wave types? i dont think i'm that young, but i like chevy orange, and semi gloss black, maybe a little aluminum for good measure ;)
funny story about chrome (at least i thought so), a guy i know builds mustangs, late models, "pro touring" type, very bad *** ones too i might add. super ford came to his shop to shoot one of the cars for a story, and when he popped the hood, the guy looked in, impressed, but dissapointed there was so little polished stuff and chrome. he asked why so little chrome, and if he could throw some on. to that the guy replied, "does chrome make it faster or handle better?, no?, thats why" i guess thats more my line of thinking ;)
but to each thier own, chrome looks good too, and people should do it like they want it, imo

69CamaroRacer,
Getting a set of wheels chromed is NOT cheap. I would call around if I were in your shoes BEFORE buying the rims. I know around my area you are looking at about $200 - $250 per rim to have them chromed. Chrome used to be fairly cheap but, these days for quality chrome it is EXPENSIVE.

I love the Chrome look too. Its a bad addiction! Its like anything else though. Painting and powder coating can be done just right too. I found a guy on ebay selling alot of chrome stuff and sent my hinges, springs, RS hood latch, and many other things to him. His prices were cheap and thats what I got. Cheap work. You get what you pay for. I was very upset with his workmanship. As mentioned, the hood hinges should be taken apart so the metal can be buffed better, leaving smooth finish before they dip them. You have a 50/50 chance at weakening the springs. They will either hold your hood up or not after they chrome them. Usually the insides of them wont get polished either. You can get some neat bolts at http://bowtiebolts.com.
A real good respectable chrome shop on the east coast is http://chromefactory.com/ They also do rims. The saying I have always seen is:
Chrome wont get ya home but sure looks good on the side of the road!

So..This weekend, I had the opportuninity to join my wife at a phography seminar in Waterloo, Iowa, but on the way, I got to stop and pick up my CHROME!! Haven't opened it all yet, but what I have looks great! It got done on time, and under budget!

Total cost was $341 for everything in the pic above. Bulk of the $$$ was the hood hinges, at $170 for the pair.

For those who asked, the shop is Quality Plating, in Sterling, IL. You can find them with an internet seach. Tomorrow, I'll lay everything out as in the before pic, and post a shot of the shiny stuff!
