It would seem very bold to claim Canadian docs for a fake car. If the players left early, then they had no interest or questioned the car.

A friend of mine has a canada copo restored and wants 125K and cant sell it. Add that to the 2 sales at BJ which also netted the sellers about 125k as well for a very desirable canada rs. I dont buy the excuse of not bidding because bidders dont know the car, isnt that why they go 7 days before the auction?? . People only want to buy things when they perceive that others want it more than they do.

Gary there is a guy in Canada who has faked plenty of COPO cars with Canadian docs . Having Canadian docs is like invoking the Jedi Mind Trick. People think , " oh, it has Canadian docs ... it must be real" and what they forget is the docs only mean that VIN such and such was "X" car with "X" options.

Charley probably has a better handle on this story than I do and correct me if I am wrong but there were five stolen ZL1's back in the day . A few years ago someone was able to have titles issued in Canada for all five of those ZL1's. Fortunately the word got out . I am sure had the word not gotten out we would have seen the miraculous recover and offering of those ZL1s at some point in the future.

So not to say this car is not a 100% legit but someone could have just as easily taken a known COPO VIN , requested the GM of Canada docs, gotten a title in Canada , or for that matter the USA, then built the car to MATCH the DOCS .....

If nothing this hobby has proven that there are plenty of "bold" characters out there.

Again I am not saying this car is not 100% real I am just saying because it has GM of Canada docs doesn't guarantee the car is legit.

canada doc car is good to have but you still have to do your homework.

The canada documentation service does not check the car, just the documentation they have on file.

Unfortunately, if someone found a copo 427 vin number, with canada documentation, a car can be built.

I don't know this car and am not saying this car is real or fake, but if the history of the car is unknown, that may have held the bidding down on this car.
bingo

Probably understood w/o saying, but some of these guys with money aren't so bright. Maybe it doesn't matter to them. Maybe they just want to say "I own a COPO Camaro". When you are a collector of many types of cars it probably is tough to know them all. Reggie Jackson can only counsel so many buyers.

When I saw it on the block, first thing I went to BJ site to read the description. At first I thought fake. :clonk:

If an owner wanted top dollar for a real car he would try to sell it in prime time?

....... but if the history of the car is unknown, that may have held the bidding down on this car.
All the better for the "smart" buyer.

The real question, is $137,000 the going price for an iron block COPO? All Camaros seemed to be down in price. Maybe it is the Mustang's time. The Boss 429s seemed to be a little cheap, though.

Could it possibly be the heavy hitters are now having isues with past sales at BJ? I know if I had the money, BJ's is not where I would look unless I personally knew the cars history. There is only so much research an auction company can do to back up a sellers claim.

I agree. Too much of a circus atmosphere.

Wasn't there a GM of Canada COPO that was a rebody a few years back? Or were there 2 cars with the same VIN? I'm wondering if this particular car is one with issues. Did anybody note the VIN on the car at the auction.

Probably a good or correct price in todays market IMO-- plus BJ had a ton of 69 camaros to choose from, and even more corvettes it seemed-- vette prices seemed down but when you have a lot of similar c2-427 vettes, there are only so many buyers. Even on the camaros, the $90k z28's made tv, but searching the auction there were several #'s matching sold around 50k. It's a buyers market still.

As for the car being registered with the COPO Connection - anyone with true knowledge of COPOs would know that Ed completely dissolved the COPO connection and invalidated every COPO Connection certification. Anyone that refers to a car being registered with the COPO Connection is about 4 years behind the times and holding onto invalid credentials.[/QUOTE]

Just because Ed dissolved the copo conection it does not mean that his certificates are no longer considered valid. His data base of copo cars is still used by many of us and I personally feel it's unfortunate that he discontinued his service.
I had Jerry M inspect and certify a car that Ed had done and they reached the same conclusion...should I throw Ed's away? Don't think so :noway:

Regarding B-J... I think most guy's that buy or sell copo car's don't feel that it's the right venue. I'd never list a car at no reserve or pay those clowns a comm for the 'priviledge' of running it across.
I hope that the RS is all it was touted to be. The new owners looked excited to have won the auction...like they couldn't believe they bought it so cheap. Good for them

I was there and saw the COPO. Looked very nice. Many of the higher end cars are displayed in the same tent with the auction; this was one of them. They are roped off and you cannot do any inspection. The cars are moved to the staging road maybe an hour prior to their time slot but the area was packed with people and by then it was dark. The display had an info card as many do and I took one. There is no mention of originality of drivetrain. All B-J placards state unless otherwise specified assume miles to be unknown and drivetrain to be not numbers-matching. Still a good buy.
