guy from down the street just now walks into my garage where I'm working on my '68. hands me these plates and says he doesn't have any use for them and thinks they would look good hanging up in my garage. as long as these plates don't match a car that's still registered, aren't they allowed on a car from the proper period? I think they're pretty valuable and probably should let him know that, and give them back.

No picture Mark, what do these plates look like? If you are talking about black plates then in July 2009 it became possible to use a black plate under the YOM (year of manufacture) law.
that's them. I guess all they'd do is run the plates and make sure they don't show up for a car that's in the system. I'm gonna give them back to my neighbor. he was just being a nice guy; doesn't know they have pretty high value. (Now, if i buy that '67 Nova I have my eye on... never mind)

Mint restored about $100 - $150 a pair with a year sticker... I've seen really nice ones in the $75 - $85 range and beat up ready to restore for $25 - $50...
I've seen nice pairs that are the right letters and numbers for a 69 go for over $300 on eBay more then once.

Depending on what is on the plates and the condition the prices differ. If you have a black and yellow plate with 427 on them you can get 400-500 dollars. Anything that referes to a performance car makes the plate more valuable .
I have done a few black and yellow plates on the 'Year of Manufacture" (YOM) program . Here is how I did it for those who are interested in the DMV process...

A) Bring in both plates that you are going to have re-issued
B) Make sure one has the model year of your car reg sticker showing . In my case 1969 ( can find the year stickers on ebay)
C) If existing plates on car are generic bring them in too. If they are personalized then you can keep those
D) Bring in current insurance on vehicle
C) Bring in current registration
E) They want a Xerox copy of the plate so if you can do that yourself or scan/copy it and print this will also save you some time. Took the clerk 10 min and 8 copies to get one she liked. She came back and went through all 8 copies.
F) Don’t forget your drivers license. I saw a few people not be able to produce their license when asked.

Here are the forms you will need Form REG352 is the YOM application . You will also use this same form , but a separate copy, for a “ Release of Interest” from the previous plate owner if the plates are not cleared or out of the DMV system.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg352.pdf

I was also requested to fill out a “ Statement of Facts” DMV form REG256 .

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg256.pdf

I filled out the top of the backside of the form with my current Lic plate number , VIN and year and make info then used the section G on the backside and typed the following . Signed the bottom , section H .

“ I would like to re assign plate ###### to my 1969 Camaro . The plate is a black and yellow California plate that is period correct for my car . “

Being DMV these procedures may differ. The DMV clerk sitting next to the lady helping me looked at me and shook his head as if to say , “ why is she making that so hard? She doesn’t know what she is doing” . So be prepared . One was a hassle to get done and the second .. once I had gone trough the process once was a piece of cake. Issued a temp on the plate. Sent the xerox copies of plate to Sacto then 4 months later I received my new stickers and reg ...

Just ended last week...

And a pair to watch...

And a big thanks to Van for putting that all together in this thread. The same info is there in the link above from all of us that went through the YOM process about a year ago but you'll have lots of reading to do to extract it... As Van states, YMMV depending on your local DMV, they all seem to have their own twist as to what is required...

I have been checking around for plates also. Most of the ones I see in decent shape are going for $250 and up. That pair DjD put up are hinky. They don't have the 63 stamped in to them. I looked at bidding on them and that kept me away.

I have seen pretty beat up pairs in the $125-200 range.

The stickers to make them legal to put on your car in the $40 range. There is a guy on ebay selling repros of the stickers, claiming they will work, but personaly I would not take a chance.

Also, I think they came out sequentially. So, for my 69, I am only looking at plates that start with X,Y or Z. Anything else was allready used up before the 69 year started.

Van,
Followed your instructions to the “T” and had success in the Gilroy office. They did require me to take the Camaro off PNO but no big deal as I hope to be driving it this summer.
Thanks bud.
I’m waiting to here back from Sacramento on tags and registration for the black plates.
They told me it may be as much as 60 days.

If you were up on plate history Bill you would know there was a point where they stopped stamping the '63" in the well and some plates don't have it, mine don't. Here's a perfect example of a survivor plate without the "63"...

Nothing hinky about that, just an old beat up plate...

Here's 3 more pair for sale right in our own forum classifieds...

And here's the last really long thread on this again, what letters are on what year are covered and a lot more...

(Mark what are you doing to screw up your attached images?)

Dennis,
My plates start as YMD and they still have the 63 stamp on them. I wasn’t aware they omitted the 63 on some plates, learn something new every day.

Bill,
I dropped $285 on mine very nice fully restored pair with a 69 tag.
I think a nice set of plates that align with year 69 “starting with X,Y, or Z” seem to bringing that kind of money.
Looked at a few sets at the Goodguys show in Pleasanton last month nice un-restored sets 250+ restored 300+

From the previous thread...

Only a couple out of place following plate alpha sequence...
