What's easiest way to tell the difference between an 8.5 and a 8.2 rearend? Can you tell just by looking at the housing or do you have to look inside? I know that I can look up the numbers on the housing. A guy's got an ad for two part cars, a 72 and 73 Nova . He says the 72 is an SS. One car has an 8.2 and one an 8.5, I would think that the SS is an 8.5. I would just like to confirm for myself. Thanks

The rear end I snagged from a '73 Nova was an 8.5" and the car was a plain-Jane Grandma model. No SS or anything. Granted, it was a 3.08 pegleg, not a posi rear though.

What tranny are you using?
My driveshaft has to be shortened about 2" now that I have the Nova rear in the car. I have a TH350. The pinion nose is about an inch and a half longer on the 8.5" rear.
