if its just a media blast(not sand) then you will be ok....if it was sand.....well,maybe it will be ok..maybe not

If the pinion bearing races are still a good press fit and the diff bearing races fit tight in the bores then it will be all right. Measure the bore with an ID micrometer or telescoping gauges and see what the bore size is. You do need to inform him that if he ever does another rear end he better tape off these areas so he doesn't have to pay someone for a rear end housing. When I have a rear end sandblasted I leave the races in the housing and remove them after it is blasted. That way there is no damage to the machined surfaces. I also leave the pinion seal and axle bearings and seals in it. I have some old covers that I bolt on so sand doesn't get inside. I also stick a piece of plastic in the vent hole.

today i went and installed the old races and caps, torqued them to 60 ftlbs and everything seems fine. they are in there really tight. i also tapped in the old pinion races and it took a while to get them seated and removed again. so im thinking i will be ok.

Also, i noticed on the axle tubes there is some gear lube coming out of these little holes that kind of look like the old fashioned way that they used to seal envelopes with a dab of wax. are they supposed to be vents or can i JB weld them.

Thanks to all!!!

The problem is that they didnt mask it before they sand blasted it! They NEVER should have blasted anything that is an oil containing or an oil containing surface. Dealing with UNTRAINED coaters, you get to spend more and more money replacing items now.

Hopefully they didnt charge you too much... If you get that media in your gears you're going to destroy your entire rear end.

my old races werent in there. ...
Like Freddie said in his reply - I also leave the old races and caps in place when sending a housing out to prevent just this kind of stuff.
Same goes for any 'Ceramic' coating process work on trans cases or other items.

If your old races have a decent interference fit (tight) and there is no odd surface distortion then you should be fine this time.
Good lesson learned for others though

As mentioned - be sure to thoroughly flush and prep that housing prior to assembly to be sure you get all of the particles out of it.
I'd also remove and replace the vent if it wasn't done so by the coater.

Oh, that little bit of lube coming out of the axle retaining welds means they are porous and will need to be redone (rewelded) or filled with something like the 'JB-Weld' you mentioned.
Not all that uncommon to find a very slight leak around them from time to time ...

i have just powerwashed it and used scrub brushes and brake clean. then powerwashed it again. before i had it coated, i used a wire wheel arount the axle tube/housing and ran a weld bead all around so it is super strong now
thanks

You want and NEED all the abrasives out of the inside
