I was reading a post - don't recall if it was here or at Team Chevelle - that mentioned a guy opening up the gasket face of his heads to rectangle port and then tapering them to the oval port walls before it entered the combustion chamber.
Is this a good idea? Seems like it would allow a lot more air flow for the motors that needed it, and the cone shape would still keep velocity high...
Thoughts? Could this be done to GM castings such as the 049 heads?

For the sake of debate it could be done. I still think that you then "alter" the flow characteristics of the port and without a flow bench It would be a trial and error process.

I agree with Milan but would venture one step further, no flow bench equals no porting other than a valve pocket clean up. It is just as easy to do damage as to do good to flow characteristics. If you do try it though please keep us posted. Thank you and good luck with your project.

I have a set of 454 open chamber peanut port heads that I'm just about to use which have had this modification done.
The only reason I'm using them is that the original heads needed a lot of work done rust cleaning etc. & I was pretty sure the valves would of had to been changed to the larger sizes because of rusty seats. These heads came along & I thought to buy them would be cheaper than all the machine work that needed doing on the original heads. These heads look as though they've been professionally done very symmetrical etc. I think it will be a good 6 weeks at least before I get the engine in & running etc. but if your interested I'll let you know what happens.

Please keep us posted. I have a set of peanut ports I measured them and I would have broken through the walls If I enlarged them
